Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provide a wide-range of legal services aimed to address issues that disproportionately impact the poor. These services include litigation, providing training and technical assistance, and community education.


The Paralegal Screener works under the direction of NLSLA Shriver Attorneys as part of a team of advocates working on a unique pilot project examining the impact of providing legal assistance to litigants facing eviction on individuals, the court, and the community. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish required. 


Position: Temporary Paralegal Screener – Shriver Self Help Center


Availability: This position is available immediately. Work location is the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown LA.  Minimal local travel as is necessary.


Salary and Benefits: Starting salary $37,828 - Commensurate with experience.  Choice of medical and dental plans as well as life and disability insurance, 125 plan, 403b with employer contribution, sick, vacation and 13 employer-paid holidays. LA METRO pass also available.


Duties and Responsibilities: The Paralegal Screener screens litigants who come to the Shriver Self Help Center seeking assistance with preparing legal documents in their eviction case; help maintain the project database and prepare reports from the database; and oversees the physical needs of the courthouse office, including maintaining client files, ensuring that supplies are kept stocked and equipment is functioning properly.


Qualifications: Capacity to handle consistent in-person client contact and dedicated to working with non-profit public interest organizations. Ability to work independently with moderate supervision.  Excellent interpersonal and computer skills, as well as the ability to problem-solve and patience/sensitivity with people in crises. Qualified candidates must have 2 or more years’ experience and/or Paralegal certificate to be considered (in addition to B.A. or B.S. degree), Strong communication skills (oral/written); Bilingual ability in English and Spanish required.  Experience working with low-income individuals and families strongly preferred. Knowledge of the Unlawful Detainer (Eviction) process is helpful, but not required.
