After School Matters provides Chicago high school teens with high quality, after-school and summer opportunities to explore and develop their talents while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond. Since 1991, more than 350,000 teens have participated in our hands-on, project-based after-school and summer programs in the arts, communications and leadership, sports and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Summary of Position:
After School Matters is seeking committed, part-time Culinary Instructors to teach culinary arts programs for 15-30 high school participants (15:1, instructor: teen ratio) between the ages of 14 to 20 for our Summer 2021 program session.
After School Matters is closely monitoring the COVID-19 public health situation. As a result, the dates and timelines listed below may slightly change based on local health recommendations/requirements and feedback from our individual program providers.
The typical schedule for Summer 2021 is as follows:
- Summer: 6 to 7 weeks, daily Monday through Thursday/Friday (based upon the program model), four instructional hours per day. Additional hours are allotted for planning, recruitment, professional development and meetings. Exact program meeting days/times are flexible, with some restrictions, so long as instructional hours are met.
- Summer programs begin in late June or early July 2021
The optimal candidate will have a passion for culinary arts and youth development. Special preference will be given to curricula and program ideas that increase access for male, Latinx participants, and the inclusion of diverse learners.

- Design an engaging, hands-on culinary arts curriculum that utilizes a variety of instructional methodologies that establishes clear objectives for teen participants
- Provide instruction in, and lead teen participants though, inquiry-based discovery methods, including but not limited to, Instructor demonstrations, hands-on activities, performances, assessment and coaching, youth and instructor content development, etc.
- Provide teen participants with the basic/advanced fundamentals and technical knowledge in the selected discipline
- Engage and guide teens through the culinary process considering the varied methods of cooking styles.
- Establish and maintain a rigorous and cooperative learning environment where students flourish taking in account varied learning strategies and best practices that address diverse abilities and backgrounds
- Guide student practice and development towards a culminating project (i.e. gallery showing, performances, portfolio development, commissions, marketing, gift shop sales) at the end of the program
- Intentionally expose teen participants to the varied professions in culinary arts and related industries
- Develop, plan, and implement high-quality related field trips, master classes and guest visits to enhance instruction and training
- Organize, develop, and coordinate special events/activities in the discipline
- Intentionally support critical youth development skills, including leadership development; community building; real-world and experiential learning; public speaking; youth voice and agency
- Attend all planning and program dates, including: Instructor orientation, professional development workshops, meetings and other required sessions
- Participate in the recruitment, interview, and selection process of participants
- Maintain a safe, engaging, and positive environment for program participants
- Provide supervision during program field trips and other youth engagement opportunities
- Manage and track program activities such as attendance, interview outcomes, enrollment, evaluation surveys, and pertinent student records in an online data tracking system (CitySpan).
- Report all problems or concerns and program updates to After School Matters Program Specialist to maintain consistent lines of communication throughout the program session.
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in the related discipline preferred but not required
- Content area expertise in culinary arts
- CPR Certification from American Red Cross or American Heart Association preferred
- Supervisory/teaching experience preferred
- Demonstrated ability to teach formal and informal technique in one of the relevant disciplines in group settings with a minimum class of 15 students
- Be knowledgeable of the relationship between culinary art with real world experiences
- Broad knowledge of culinary arts discipline and its terms and definitions.
- Enthusiastic about teaching culinary arts, including baking, pastry, and savory items.
- Experience working with groups of people (teenagers and adults)
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be organized and possess a strong attention to detail
- Supervise teens at an average of 15:1, instructor: teen ratio
