The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization, seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurial leader to be the inaugural deputy director of recruiting.

Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative. LDF’s litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education, and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system. LDF’s mission is supported by a highly skilled and dedicated cadre of racial justice attorneys and staff who continue to defend the gains and protections won over the past 80 years of the civil rights struggle.

The new political landscape and retrenchment in key areas of civil rights pose unprecedented threats to the hard-won gains of the last half-century. The new and renewed assaults on human rights present significant challenges for LDF’s work and as a result have attracted strategic investments in its mission. The annual operating budget has nearly doubled in size to about $45 million in recent years, and the organization projects employee headcount will grow by about 35 percent, from 125 to a steady state of about 170. The organization’s expansion comes on the heels of years-long and continuing efforts to advocate for and advance racial justice in the United States.

Serving as the inaugural deputy director of recruiting presents an unparalleled opportunity for a forward-thinking, sophisticated relationship-builder and leader to inspire enthusiasm for LDF’s critical mission. The selected candidate will have the experience of leveraging best-in-class practices to attract and retain top professionals. As a trusted advisor to key organizational leaders, the deputy director of recruiting will identify and anticipate talent needs. They will be an astute decision-maker, who uses data to successfully manage full-cycle recruitment processes that can compete in today’s job market. Familiarity and mastery of HRIS systems, particularly the design and implementation of an ATS are crucial to the success of the deputy director of recruiting. In addition to their effective use of data and technology, they will be a skilled communicator, who possesses the gravitas and confidence to clearly convey their objective with internal and external constituencies.

The deputy director of recruiting will join the human resources department comprised of 4-5 staff members. They will directly report to the director of human resources and will be supported by an internal operating budget. This department is headquartered in New York City.
