Staff Accountant


Media Matters for America — a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media — seeks a candidate with strong accounting skills to serve as Staff Accountant. 

 

This is a full-time position and will be remote through Labor Day 2021 due to the continued COVID-19 public health crisis, with a preference for candidates who are based in the Washington, D.C., area.  

 

Role Summary:

 

The Staff Accountant is a key member of the Finance team. This position performs basic accounting functions in support of the Chief Financial Officer.  The successful candidate will have proven abilities in oral and written communications, multitasking, problem solving, and supporting the needs and demands of a growing organization.

 

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports to: The Staff Accountant reports to the Chief Financial Officer and works closely with the Senior Staff Accountant.
  • This is a junior, non-managerial position, with room for growth

 

Responsibilities:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Collect and track vendor invoices from receipt to point of payment
  • Enter and update accounts payable/receivable vendor data
  • Produce annual 1099 tax forms
  • Assist in maintaining key aspects of vendor relationships as determined by the CFO
  • Process deposits;code contributions according to nonprofit accounting reporting requirements
  • Perform daily data entry and monthly reconciliation of donors database, as well as other reconciliation and account analysis as needed
  • Update payroll and HR benefits
  • Produce scheduled and ad hoc reports from organization’s accounting software
  • Assist with the annual independent audit and 990 filings
  • Assist the CFO with special projects
  •  Performs other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or relevant academic discipline; or, an associate’s degree plus two years professional non-profit experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel a must) and Quickbooks (or other accounting software).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Extremely self-motivated, detail-oriented, solution focused
