The Southern California Black Worker Hub (BW Hub) mission is to align progressive Black worker vision and voice in Southern California through centralized coordination that accelerates grassroots organizing movements and consolidates regional power to scale, positioning Black workers to win justice locally, regionally, statewide, and beyond. Our staff and members are in three affiliate Black Worker Centers across Southern California and our three CBO affiliates are dedicated to worker rights, Black community empowerment, community engagement, and our vision of a world without the Black jobs crisis. We are growing.

 

The regional organizer will work with the BW Hub Manager and Digital Engagement Team to implement base-building strategies mobilization and organizing campaigns that grow participation in regional engagement efforts and assist regional Black Worker Centers in engaging volunteers digitally and moving them to off-line participation as members and activist leaders in the Black Worker Center movement.   

 

The regional organizer leads BW Hub outreach, mobilization, and overall engagement efforts and assists in the development and execution of campaigns. The organizer is the point person and face of the BW Hub in the field among workers, partners, and allies. The regional organizer knows their job is not to speak for Black workers but to develop the conditions in which Black workers can speak for themselves as a collective powerful voice. A primary focus of the position is to serve as a bridge for regional organizing and mobilization efforts across BW hub affiliate members and to assist those members in supporting regional campaigns through outreach, recruitment, and assessment of new members. The regional organizer will support developing lists of potential members and develop strategies with BW Hub and BWC staff to grow membership and grassroots worker leaders who are committed to the vision and mission of the organization and dedicate time and skills to the collective. This staffer will create a compassionate and rich culture in virtual spaces and in person, helping to share our political analysis with our volunteer base. The regional organizer will support coalitional partners and increase the visibility of the BW Hub and its members’ efforts to create change through campaigns, actions, events, and social media. This position requires routine travel.


Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Support digital engagement campaigns by recruiting and managing staff and volunteers to conduct outreach including phone banking, texting, 1-1s, and mobilization.
  • Work closely with BW Hub members to implement regional campaigns and to support by engaging their members in BW Hub in campaign-related activities.
  • Manage phonebanks
  • Assist in developing scripts, testimony, and conduct story collection
  • Develop testimonies, training volunteers to  speakers and maintain a speaker’s bureau and story bank
  • Assist in coordinating and conducting house visits, phone calls, site visits, and other 1:1 outreach to build membership, support leaders, and further the goals of a campaign
  • Work with BWCs to conduct new member orientations
  • Assist in the development of BW hub outreach materials, campaign leaflets, and other materials
  • Assist in the management of member lists, databases, assessments, charts, and other campaign tools
  • Identify workplace issues and help members organize for solutions and power
  • Submit a detailed report each week demonstrating activities
  • Support communications/digital initiatives and manage online presence including websites and social media BW Hub

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  •  3+ years non-profit, community grassroots, or union organizing experience required
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Black liberation and worker justice
  • Ability to develop outreach and organizing plans
  • Skilled in the fundamental principles of grassroots organizing
  • Able to develop successful turnout, mobilization, and leadership development plans
  • Ability to plan and facilitate monthly membership meetings
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer skills and proficiency with basic programs such as Access, Microsoft Office/Word, Google, and social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours with some travel
  • Ability to manage membership database and provide detailed leadership assessments/campaign summaries
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and conduct training
  • Familiar with digital engagement/organizing approaches
  • Experience assisting members to resolve grievances, and other workplace issues preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and a car with the ability to travel regionally
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity, social justice, and fostering a collaborative dynamic grassroots environment required
  • Bachelor's from an accredited college and university is a plus.


Compensation

     Full-time position: Salary range $62,000-66,000 per year depending on experience.
