Elders in Action (EIA) is a nonprofit, located in downtown Portland, that educates, advocates for, and serves older adults in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington Counties. Volunteers are the backbone of the work we do. Our Personal Advocate program connects those in need to volunteers who can help them.

The successful candidate will have an awareness of age-related issues and cultural sensitivity to various belief systems including “ageism.” They will exhibit an ability to engage with community members of diverse cultures, languages, and needs, and have a passion for supporting and assisting older adults. We seek an enthusiastic team member with a good sense of humor who enjoys a flexible work environment, regular potlucks and lots of laughter!

Position

The Personal Advocate Program Coordinator offers support to older adults by providing them with a personal and friendly point of contact, well-researched referrals and face-to-face advocacy. The Personal Advocate program utilizes trained volunteers to assist older adults in resolving problems they experience in their daily lives, such as eviction prevention, medical insurance issues, and identity theft.

Responsibilities:

  • Staff agency helpline in a courteous and professional manner and assess each call for referrals and/or personal advocacy;
  • Assign and track cases using agency database;
  • Work with program staff and Deputy Director to create and maintain the program structure, partnership opportunities, and overall evaluation of the program; 
  • Develop and conduct trainings for volunteers and community members in relevant subject areas;
  • Supervise and support Personal Advocate program volunteers and in-office program volunteers;
  • Research community resources and engage with community partners to ensure accurate information and referral services; and
  • Represent Elders in Action at community forums.


Qualifications and Skills:

·     Philosophy compatible with Elders in Action Mission & Vision;

·     3-5 years’ experience or advanced knowledge of the Portland metro aging and disability social service system and resources;

·     Ability to relate to and empathize with many kinds of people;

·     Bachelor’s Degree in Social Service field or direct experience working with older adults from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds;

·     Volunteer management experience;

·     Ability to exercise independent judgment and make decisions within established guidelines;

·     Experience working with the public and relating to program volunteers;

·     Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing, on the phone, and in person with people in diverse situations and of varied backgrounds;

·     Strong organizational abilities and team participation skills;

·     Ability to apply critical thinking to assess client issues and identify steps toward resolution;

·     Demonstrated ability to problem solve, to be proactive and to prioritize and handle a variety of projects simultaneously; and

·     Strong computer technology skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word and databases. Ability to remain up to date on current technology systems, learn new technology systems and implement within scope of duties.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary for this position is $36,000 along with a comprehensive benefits package.
