Title: Saturday Math Instructor for 9th & 10th Graders (Part-Time)

HEAF is a comprehensive supplemental education and youth development organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values and personal resiliency they need to ensure success in school, career and life. HEAF identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they are successfully admitted to four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, Saturday and summer educational and youth development programs.

 

Program Description:

  • September 2018 – December 2018
  • Saturdays, 9:00am- 12:00pm
  • Location- HEAF@Brooklyn Site
  • Geometry and Trigonometry  Problem Solving Strategies
  • Course is taught to 9th  & 10th Graders from various NYC High Schools
  • Hourly wage based on experience and/or license

 

Job/Course Description:   College Quest, HEAF’s high school program, is looking for a creative math instructor for the spring 2018 semester that is knowledgeable in algebra and geometry.  This particular math course only meets once a week, Saturday mornings, and is designed to provide academic enrichment to 9th and 10th graders within the areas of problem solving, arithmetic, integrated algebra, and advanced geometry while keeping the students engaged and interested in the subject content. Students are welcomed to bring in their individual math assignments and receive assistance from the instructor. The class will work on several math strategies and problems as it relates to performing well on their respective regents examinations. The class culminates with a final group project on a math topic of their choice.  Instructors will collaborate with HEAF staff to develop lesson plans related to the curriculum map and grids and aligned with the group’s math goals. Resources and materials provided by HEAF programs.

 

Job Requirements:

  • B.A. in Mathematics, Education or related field (M.A. preferred)
  • NYC/NYS certification in Mathematics or significantly experienced working with youth
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in  middle school, high school or Community Based Organizations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Impeccable classroom management skills
  • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff
  • Ability and willingness to commit to entire program
  • Ability and willingness to have FUN in the classroom
