Communications Manager

Position Summary:

The COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER’S primary focus is to amplify -- locally, nationally and globally -- The Lark’s mission, programs and outreach efforts through a skillfully planned and executed public relations and marketing strategy. Working directly with Lark writers, staff and the leadership team, the CM supports the vision of The Lark and affiliated artists and communicates that to the broader community. The CM develops relationships with key journalists across the media platforms; develops captivating narratives and pitches for a wide array of programs and plays; creates innovative ways to build community around artists and their plays; and raises The Lark’s institutional profile. The CM is responsible for all aspects of marketing, which includes creating programs, posters, press releases, brochures, newsletters, website and social media. In all endeavors, the Communications Manager works towards the Lark’s mission and vision, and ensures that their work aligns with The Lark’s values of equity, access and inclusion. The CM works to help make The Lark a nurturing environment where artists can fulfill their artistic potential and feel welcome, valued and wholly supported.

Position Status: Full-Time Non - Exempt 

Start Date: July 12, 2021, in-person August 2021

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement an integrated marketing and communication strategy for the organization and its programming based on a shared understanding of The Lark’s mission, vision and values.  
  • Serves as primary creative director and develops content calendar for Lark’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and instagram) 
  • Imagine, strategize and implement innovative ways to raise the public profile of The Lark and uplift the artists it serves and their relative work and impact. 
  • Oversee outward facing communications, primarily but not limited to the website, social media, and press. Responsible for the Lark’s website maintenance and its communications tools and analytics.
  • Creates all marketing collateral, including but not limited to ticketing announcements, cross promotion, and other e-marketing messages, all of which help develop and maintain community relations and partnerships. Draft, edit and distribute The Lark’s digital newsletter. Works closely with Community Engagement Manager and Artistic staff to create content.
  • Draft and distribute compelling pitches and press releases to garner press coverage in local and national press across mediums. Work to build and maintain press and public relations connections and relationships in the field.
  • Serve as The Lark’s primary media contact by coordinating interviews and comment requests. Offer support to artists and staff to prepare for interviews and other public-facing events by drafting talking points, scheduling and sending reminder emails and prep script language when needed. Track and collect press coverage for the organization, programs and artists.
  • Track advancement of Lark-developed plays and of playwrights’ successes.  
  • Oversee the communications budget
  • Continually works towards making The Lark more accessible and inclusive for onsite and online audiences.
  • Assist with other relative tasks as needed.
  • Be a part of The Lark team by participating in staff meetings, staff retreats, and celebrations. The Lark asks staff to engage in conversation and skills building in the areas of equity and inclusion, to treat everyone in The Lark community with consideration and respect, and to contribute to a healthy environment where everyone can feel welcome, heard, and whole.
  • Serves as an ambassador for The Lark and its mission with a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.   

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Innovative thinker with a strong commitment to equity, accessibility and inclusivity.  
  • Understanding of current media and PR strategies and trends.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to write for different audiences and channels.
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to analyze reports, determine organizational needs, and propose possible solutions to challenges.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Working knowledge of and/or passion for the not-for-profit theatre and performance field.
  • Experience using data to tell a story that can be communicated in an easily digestible and actionable way.
  • Organized self-starter and self-directed, willing to be flexible, a positive attitude, and a willingness to adjust to a rapidly changing landscape and the possibility of unanticipated projects and demands.
  • Able to manage multiple communications projects simultaneously and able to meet established deadlines.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2-3 years of professional experience with 1-2 years in communications, public relations, media relations or similar career discipline.
  • Experience with web content management systems, email marketing software (MailChimp preferred), Social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), Google Analytics, and Google Ads.
  • Knowledge of the not-for-profit theatre sector and The Lark’s place in the theatre landscape.
  • Experience in working with Adobe Creative Suite and previous work in graphic design or art direction.  

SALARY: $45k - $50k annually
