Paralegal

The Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center (MJC) seeks a highly motivated person to serve as a paralegal. MJC is a public interest law firm that litigates high-impact civil rights and systemic reform cases in courts around the country. MJC’s Supreme Court and Appellate Program seeks to advance criminal and social justice, with a focus on appellate litigation before the Supreme Court of the United States, and the federal and state courts of appeal.

The paralegal position is an exciting opportunity to be part of this important effort. The successful candidate will perform a range of duties to support the Supreme Court and Appellate Program’s work. They will work closely with the Program’s Senior Research Specialist to manage both the administrative and research-support components of this position.

Role & Responsibilities:

Paralegal tasks (55%), including:

·      Drafting simple legal documents;

·      Coordinating and proofing appellate court filings, including formatting briefs, appendices, and exhibits according to court rules;

·      Checking citations for accuracy and formatting, according to Bluebook rules;

·      Communicating with the office’s clients and other people seeking assistance from the firm;

·      Creating and maintaining electronic case files; and

·      Assisting with the processing of conflicts checks for prospective cases, including gathering information from online databases.

Administrative tasks (30%), including:

·      Collating, organizing, and formatting mailings;

·      Processing incoming and outgoing mail, including printing letters, labels, and postage; scanning and electronically filing mail; and communicating with members of the team regarding mail;

·      Paying invoices, compiling and submitting expense reports and timesheets;

·      Maintaining office supplies and equipment, and other administrative tasks associated with managing an office space; and

·      Serving as the office’s liaison with building management; the office’s remote IT support, and the organization’s Treasurer/benefits coordinator.

Assisting attorneys in tracking developments in cases that present important civil rights and criminal justice issues (5%)

Assisting with the preparation for oral arguments in court (5%)

Other Job Duties (5%)

·      Participating in trainings related to office technology and office-wide practices; and

·      Attending MJC organization meetings.

Experience and Qualifications:

Education/Certification: Bachelor’s/Associate’s degree in relevant field (e.g. criminal justice, sociology, public policy, political science, etc.) or paralegal certificate preferred.

Skills and Experience:

  • 2-4 years of administrative support experience required;
  • Administrative support experience in a legal setting preferred;
  • Strong writing and editing skills;
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to follow-through on assignments independently, to manage several projects at once, and to be flexible in the event of changing priorities and deadlines;
  • A close (if not obsessive) attention to detail and a commitment to completing tasks efficiently and thoroughly;
  • Energetic self-starter with a desire to make change in the criminal justice system;
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively as part of a team;
  • Prior experience related to criminal justice, appellate litigation, or other exposure to the legal system is a plus;
  • Comfortable working with people in detention and who are caught up in the criminal legal system;
  • Must be able to maintain discretion and awareness of professional responsibility to clients and confidential matters.
  • Must be vaccinated and boosted against the coronavirus unless granted a medical or religious exemption.

Technology:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe and a willingness to learn internal programs required;
  • Experience with legal research databases (Westlaw, LexisNexis and/or PACER) preferred.

LOCATION: Washington, D.C. at our H St. NE office, in person 3-4 days a week.

COMPENSATION: $52,000 to $58,000 annual base salary range.
