The Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy consists of two schools, the School of Public Policy and Management and the School of Information Systems and Management, and offers an academic experience unlike any other. Heinz College prepares students with a unique ability to conduct careful and objective analysis of meaningful data, to understand and demonstrate the power of information technology, and to lead and implement change in managerial and policy contexts.

The country faces a global pandemic, climate change, systemic racism and a generational economic downturn. At the same time, innovation in artificial intelligence, robotics, and other technologies can play a critical role in addressing these and other societal challenges. To do so, technological change must be driven through new public policy, partnerships and research.

Established in 2018, The Block Center for Technology and Society at Carnegie Mellon University focuses on how emerging technologies will alter the future of work, how AI and analytics can be harnessed for social good, and how innovation in these spaces can be more inclusive and generate targeted, relevant solutions that reduce inequality and improve quality of life.

The impacts of our work and the rapid growth of The Center leads us to seek a dynamic Program Manager. This essential role, reporting to the Executive Director, is to oversee much of the management and operations that support our mission while providing critical leadership for our continued growth.

This is a fixed-term position.

An ideal candidate is:

  • Entrepreneurial while also being incredibly organized;
  • Able to work independently without significant oversight while remaining focused on mission priorities;
  • Able to quickly understand academic projects and provide value to faculty;
  • A focused manager who values seeing projects become “real”;
  • Willing to “roll up their sleeves” to do small organizational and logistical tasks as needed, with the same level of quality as larger, more sophisticated project management;
  • Committed to the belief that with the right policies in place, technology can address societies' most complex challenges.

Goals of the Position:

  • Improve the Center's overall operations and workflow;
  • Grow Center projects and partnerships through independent management of particular lines of work;
  • Improve internal engagement with CMU faculty, particularly Block funded faculty;
  • Increase connectivity and real-world outcomes of Block events, student competitions and other convenings.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Executive Director, develop an annual work plan to align the Center’s four major areas of work;
  • Manage particular Policy Projects- 6-18 month engagements between Block Faculty and an external national partner, with the ultimate goal of significant policy impact;
  • Create presentations, memos, and project management trackers;
  • Oversee and operate major events, round tables and other on-campus and off-campus convening;
  • Assist the Executive Director in fundraising activities, including drafting proposals and annual impact reports, and identifying prospective foundation and federal resources.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Ideally four+ years work experience, or compelling academic accomplishments;
  • Ideally, but not required, experience in public policy or philanthropy.

Requirements:

  • Background check;
  • Cover letter required to be considered
