Staff Writer/Editor

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, in the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

Position Summary:

The Brennan Center is seeking a writer/editor to play a crucial role in the editorial department of its Communications division. The writer/editor will be expected to research, report, and write pieces for the Brennan Center website, including op-ed style analyses, Q&A interviews with program staff, and explainers on a regular basis, often in response to breaking news. This material may include information that needs to be displayed in tables, graphs, or other forms of data visualization. The writer/editor will also post pieces on the website and write social media copy to promote them.

In addition to these core writing responsibilities, the writer/editor will also be expected to edit website pieces and reports by Brennan Center’s staff for digital and print publication, and will on occasion work cross-departmentally to help promote content on social media platforms, occasionally taking on evening or weekend responsibilities. The writer/editor may also help with writing and editing newsletters.

Responsibilities:

  • Write both topical and evergreen content for the Brennan Center website on relevant news developments and Brennan Center work;
  • Ghostwrite analyses and op-eds for Brennan program staff;
  • Edit analyses and op-ed content written by Brennan Center program staff;

  • Edit Brennan Center research reports for digital and print publication;
  • Write and edit newsletters on an as-needed basis;
  • Work with social media staff to promote original content;
  • Work with Communications team in developing original editorial content strategies to advance the Brennan Center’s work;
  • Help edit — and sometime write on an as-needed basis — Brennan Center marketing materials for events, symposia, podcasts, as needed;

  • the ability to produce sharp, clear writing on a tight deadline;
  • a strong familiarity with the media and political landscape;
  • a nose for angles on the news that tie in to the Brennan Center’s work or positions as well as an understanding of legal, legislative, and political advocacy;
  • a savviness about social media, especially Twitter;
  • a passion for our issues and a sense of urgency appropriate to the current moment; and
  • a sense of humor
