Your Career Opportunity


As Student Success and Transitions Coach you will be part of the dynamic MEDA Mission Promise Neighborhood team helping students successfully make the transition from middle school to John O’Connell High School. You will be the direct connection between students and families, the schools, and the vast array of resources that comprise our community network. You will do regular outreach to students as well as community service providers and contribute to the overall success of the Mission Promise Neighborhood initiative. This position is for 32 hrs/week.


Your work will impact students and their families during a very important time in their lives as you help ensure that students are fully ready to fit into the high school learning community. The successful candidate will leverage their ability to relate to students and families and their knowledge of community resources to make sure that “Every Child Achieves and Every Family Succeeds”.


Specifically, you will:


  • Provide one-on-one consultations to families and their children to assess their strengths and needs and assist them develop and follow through with action plans for academic success
  • Inspire families to become advocates for system change to benefit the Mission Community
  • Develop an expert understanding of social services in the Mission District and in San Francisco and build collaborative relationships with agencies and families to promote family success
  • Engage community partner and SFUSD middle schools to identify and support vulnerable students and families transitioning to John O’Connell High School.
  • Contribute to our body of knowledge and data by monitoring and tracking service statistics


 Your Keys to Success


To perform successfully in this role, you will need to leverage these key qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree with major in Social Work, Sociology, Education, Ethnic Studies or related filed. Degree can be substituted with 2-3 years’ experience in direct services in a school, community based organization or public agency                    
  • Bilingual Spanish/English fluency both written and oral
  • Experience working with immigrant, economically disadvantaged and diverse populations
  • Ability to take initiative, identify and solve problems, be accountable, and do whatever it takes to ensure that families meet their goals.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build strong and trusting relationships with all MPN partners (CBO’s, schools, public agencies)
