George Jackson Academy (GJA) is the only school of its kind in New York City: an independent, nonsectarian upper elementary and middle school for academically capable boys from lower-income and underserved families. The school was created to engage boys from 4th to 8th grade, a time when young men are particularly vulnerable to disengaging from school. Currently, GJA serves more than 140 young men of color to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

The School Library Media Specialist will oversee the school’s media/library center, actively collaborating with the development, supervision, and use of the school’s media and innovation center; supervise and continue to develop the 4-8 grade library programs, services, and facility; and serve as a member of the faculty, as well as an active member of the teams coordinating STEAM and Project Based Learning initiatives at the school. 


Library and Technology

  • Manage and develop the Library Collection ( print, digital, and other formats). database, and other resources
  • Promote library/media resources to the school community , including updating and current displays, communication and workshops.
  • Ongoing strategically plan for the library/ media center that aligns with the school
  • Create and manage the media center budget

Literacy and Research

  • Maintain a working knowledge of current children’s and young adult literature
  • Coordinate with summer reading program
  • Teach STEAM classes integrating research skills

Support and information Management

  • Assist teachers in finding resources to support STEAM integration throughout the curriculum
  • Current understanding of best practices in education
  • Ability to collaborate and team-teaching with teachers and staff
  • Assist teachers in finding resources that support the integration and use of technology throughout the curriculum
  • Providing whole class and one- on - one research and technology application support to students
  • Comfortable with use of a variety of software and applications, including but not limited Google Apps for Education, Scratch and multimedia production.

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or relatable studies;
  • Excellent written and verbal skills; experience with children required.
  • Experience working in a library also preferred.
