DEPARTMENT: Government Relations (GR)

STATUS: One year fellowship with employee benefits

REPORTS TO: Deputy Director of Government Relations 

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To provide legislative and administrative support to the GR Deputy Director, who is responsible for international humanitarian and poverty-focused development assistance issues.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:

  1. Monitors and researches international issues specifically related to annual budget and appropriations processes.
  2. Helps coordinate the Interfaith Working Group on Foreign Assistance, which Bread for the World co-manages and leads:
  • Schedules, prepares for, and participates in the working group’s monthly meetings, as well as disseminate meeting notes and follow-up action items in a timely manner;
  • Schedule Congressional and Administration meetings, and drafts talking points;
  • Attend relevant Congressional hearings, and partner events;
  • Draft Congressional letters, and research and prepare other background papers;
  • Assist in planning and organizing annual Faith Leader Fly-In Lobby Day as well as in-district events;
  • Updates and manages the working group’s website and assist in other communications task; 
  • Organize national call-in days and Congressional briefings in support of foreign assistance.
  1. Analyzes and develops data tables at request of policy analyst supporting international work.
  2. Provides assistance in drafting GR publications.
  3. Participate in other coalitions and task forces as needed.
  4. Answers inquiries as needed by other departments.
  5. Completes administrative requirements such as ensuring the accurate and timely entry of activities into the Raisers Edge database, timesheets, performance evaluations, etc…

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES  : 

  1. Provides assistance to international policy team.
  2. Attends weekly departmental and team meetings and other internal meetings.
  3. Provides administrative support as needed.  

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:      None 

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Strong interest in legislation, Capitol Hill and a working knowledge of the federal budget and appropriations process
  • Previous internship on Capitol Hill is a plus
  • A strong interest in fostering interfaith dialogue and collaboration as it relates to advocacy around international development and humanitarian assistance programs
  • Solid research, writing, and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with Christian faith perspective and advocacy to end hunger desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT ISSUES:

Must be responsive to emails and phone calls off-site during evenings, weekends, and holidays to support time-sensitive matters.
