MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States. An exhibition space rather than a collecting institution, MoMA PS1 devotes its energy and resources to displaying the most experimental art in the world. A catalyst and an advocate for new ideas, discourses, and trends in contemporary art, MoMA PS1 actively pursues emerging artists, new genres, and adventurous new work by recognized artists in an effort to support innovation in contemporary art. MoMA PS1 achieves this mission by presenting its diverse program to a broad audience in a unique and welcoming environment in which visitors can discover and explore the work of contemporary artists. Exhibitions at MoMA PS1 include artists’ retrospectives, site-specific installations, historical surveys, arts from across the United States and the world, and a full schedule of music and performance programming.

Summary of Position

MoMA PS1 is seeking an Associate Director of Operations who will focus on overseeing, managing, and coordinating all aspects of museum operations and play a critical role in long term building planning across a unique campus and challenging facilities. The Associate Director of Operations will supervise teams supporting the museum’s operation and serves as the point of contact with contractors and vendors as it pertains to building maintenance, construction and safety. 

The Associate Director also serves as the lead for emergency planning and safety training and compliance, ensuring a safe workplace environment for all MoMA PS1 employees and visitors. Additionally, the Associate Director of Operations will address situations as they arise, being able to shift focus from rapidly shifting priorities as needed. They will also work closely with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and the NYC Department of Design and Construction. 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Minimum of six years of experience in progressively responsible roles in museum operations, or comparable combination of experience and substantial knowledge of art museums, facilities, and building systems, including a minimum of three years in leadership and supervision.
  • Related Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Proven skills in leading by example, supervising, training, and effectively improving staff performance, as well as adapting work flows and procedures to improve efficiency, collaboration, and service.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage time, multitask, take initiative, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with dynamic and rapidly shifting priorities.
  • Excellent organizational abilities, analytical skills, and attention to detail with ability to not lose sight of the big picture.
  • Professional and positive attitude and demeanor, with exceptional oral and written communication skills; demonstrated skill in presenting information in a manner that is accessible to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to communicate technically and negotiate with, as well as direct and supervise, work of a wide range of vendors, including engineers and technicians, regarding museum systems and operations.
  • Ability to work productively and collaboratively with all levels of management and support staff, and maintain highly professional and positive attitude in a dynamic and creative setting.
  • Experience working with a unionized workforce
  • Strong organizational ability, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional judgment, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive situations and matters.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed, and to respond to emergency situation on an “on call” basis.
