Public Counsel’s Children’s Rights Project (CRP) serves children, youth, and their families on a variety of legal issues, including probate legal guardianship, public benefits, and adoption. The adoptions team and the guardianship team are part of the larger Children’s Rights Project. The guardianship team operates a free legal clinic three days each week, providing pro per assistance with petitions for guardianship, visitation, and termination of guardianship. The team also supports the families involved in guardianships with social services and immigration assistance.  The adoptions team assists caregivers adopting children from the Los Angeles County foster care system. In addition to finalizing the adoption, the team helps families adopting children with special needs access services and public benefits including health and mental health care, Adoption Assistance and Foster Care benefits, Social Security Benefits, regional center services and resolving issues with Medi-Cal.


JOB SUMMARY

This is a full time position, with time split equally between the guardianship team and adoptions team.  The Coordinator will focus on conducting intake interviews with adopting parents with the adoptions team and preparing guardianship and other applications for pro per litigants with the guardianship team. In addition, the Coordinator will provide other program and administrative support. 

The position has the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct issue screening intake interviews with adopting parents by phone. Draft case summary memos, including a case advocacy plan for pro bono attorneys.
  • Assist litigants at the Pro Per Guardianship Clinic to complete the legal documents necessary in a probate guardianship matter. (The clinic is currently operating remotely, but is housed inside the Stanley Mosk courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.)
  • Open new matters for clients, conduct conflict checks, and create client database entries and hard copies of files.
  • Assist with administrative duties related to the everyday functions of the Guardianship Clinic and Adoptions Project.


ESSENTIAL JOB SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Experience conducting client interviews
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills; familiarity with Word, Outlook, Excel, Case Management Software/database systems and legal form software preferred
  • Ability to communicate in an empathetic and professional manner with supervisor, team members, and litigants;
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills: ability to work in a fast-paced environment balancing multiple tasks and remaining detail-oriented
  • Experience working with children and/or public benefits preferred but not required
  • B.A degree or substantial work experience preferred 
  • Spanish language fluency strongly preferred
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse cultural, racial, geographic, and economic backgrounds;
  • Commitment to economic and racial justice and the mission of Public Counsel.

Though generally this position is office-based, currently all staff must work remotely from their homes.
