Bronx Charter School for the Arts (Bronx Arts) is a public elementary school founded on the principle that a rich and vibrant background in the arts is a key component of achieving academic excellence. Bronx Arts is in its 15th year of operation serving students in Hunts Point, which is in the most impoverished congressional district in the country with 38% of the population living at or below the federal poverty line. In 2014 Bronx County was designated 62nd out of 62 counties in New York State in the Robert Wood Johnson County Health Ranking Report inspiring the Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr. to announce a #not62 initiative to move the Bronx out of last place by 2020. In this deeply challenged community, the founders of Bronx Arts had the audacity to build a school that is dedicated to academic excellence and excellence in arts instruction. Bronx Arts is currently the top performing elementary school in District 8.

The Director of Operations is responsible for ensuring that the design and on-going execution of the school’s operational systems, policies, and procedures support the attainment of the school’s goals as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. This position supervises the Manager of Student Affairs, Office Manager/HR Assistant, Custodial Staff, and all Cafeteria Aides. 

 Main areas of responsibility include:

Reporting and Compliance: Assist the Executive Director and Instructional Administration in formulating and reporting all aspects of state required documentation including but not limited to: TSDL, ePMF, Free & Reduced Lunch, and ATS

Student Data Management: Oversees recordkeeping and student information systems, analyzes and prepares reports on student data using PowerSchool, ATS, Child Nutrition System, NYSED, TEACH among others

Technology and Telecommunications: Manages contracted tech support and other vendors, acquires equipment and software, manages compliance with and applications for eRate funding, ensures the functionality of the school’s network and hardware (including troubleshooting and minor repair).

Student Transportation: Oversees start of school year bussing set-up, supervises ongoing changes to routes and recordkeeping, supervises ongoing troubleshooting and issue resolution and communicates with families, DOE, drivers, and bus companies about transportation issues.

Student Recruitment, Enrollment and Registration: Supervises recruitment and application processes, oversees student lottery, manages ongoing enrollment and student recordkeeping.

Food Services: Manages vendor relationships and compliance with State requirements for the Free and Reduced Meals Program, including recordkeeping and reimbursement, and menu creation with the food vendor, designs lunchroom procedures, supervises cafeteria staff and school aides.

Safety: Manages annual revision and compliance with the school safety plan, supervises drills, ensures regular maintenance of the schools security system and fire systems, supervises contracted security guard, designs procedures and policies to maintain a safe school environment on a daily basis.

Human Resources: Manages the organization’s benefits (Health, Dental, 403b) and HR compliance and works closely with Finance and independent brokers to ensure coordination of responsibilities.

Facilities: Supervises custodial staff, manages vendors for pest control and repair work, manages construction and expansion efforts, manages insurance compliance and policy coverage, designs policies and procedures for cleaning and maintenance. 

Front Office/General: Oversees purchasing and receiving for general supplies, ensures that office equipment is operational and properly maintained, oversees general operations and professionalism of front office, including communications with parents

The Director of Operations is further expected to:

-       Lead the effort to recruit, select, orient, and retain a talented staff both on the instructional and operations teams that is committed to attaining their goals that support the mission of Bronx Arts.

-       Actively seek out ways to continually improve his or her practice in order to increase his or her effectiveness in his or her role.

-       Actively strive to embody the organizations operating principles in his or her work.

-       Operate according to the professional standards of the school.

-       Take responsibility for the success of the organization by maximizing all opportunities to further the mission of the organization within the school, broader Hunts Point, and New York City communities.

-       Support the on-going effort to establish a school culture that reinforces the school’s mission, goals, and operating principles within all aspects of the Bronx Arts community including, but not limited to, the organization’s operations and facilities-related systems, policies, and procedures.


o  Master’s degree preferred

o  At least 5 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in a charter school or non-profit setting, with at least two years successful experience supervising a team

o  Excellent written and oral communication skills

o  Experience in creating, analyzing, and improving systems and procedures 

o  Experience working with Mac IT systems; some basic knowledge of HTML preferred

o  Detail oriented

o  Highly organized

o  Good at time management and multitasking

o  Solutions oriented

o  Willing to become a committed member of the Bronx Arts community

o  NYSTL/FAMIS, PowerSchool, Illuminate and SmartBoard experience important

This is a full-time salaried position, requiring early morning hours. Salary is commensurate with experience.
