Organizational Background:

Equality California (EQCA) is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. EQCA’s mission is to bring the voices of LGBTQ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve. Through its legislative work, EQCA has successfully sponsored 127 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with strongest LGBT-civil rights protections in the country.

 

Equality California Institute (EQCAI) is a 501(c)3 organization that has a parallel mission statement to EQCA, its 501(c)4 counterpart. EQCAI educates the broader community on important LGBT issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBT seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEPed, Fair Share for Equality, and Health Happens with Equality.

Position Overview:

Equality California and Equality California Institute seek a full-time Development Manager. The Development Manager is part of a four-person development department that is responsible for the implementation of all fundraising activities, including major gifts, annual giving, corporate giving, and large-scale event fundraising. This position is ideal for candidates with 3-5 years of experience in development, including major donor cultivation and stewardship, individual giving campaigns, and fundraising event management. This position would be based in our Los Angeles office and will be supervised by the Director of Development.


Responsibilities:

Major gift and individual donor responsibilities include:

  • Provide high level support to staff on all individual giving fundraising elements.
  • Research and identify prospective major gift donors; update research on existing donors.
  • Engage in direct donor cultivation and asks.
  • Conceive of and implement major donor stewardship events throughout California.
  • Prepare lists for call time for the development director & executive director as it relates to events and other fundraising; maintain status updates in donor database
  • Represent EQCA at community events, dinners and lunches during evenings and weekends in order to identify and cultivate prospective donors.
  • Work with staff and outside consultant to implement individual giving campaigns, including direct mail and digital.
  • Drafting donor correspondence, including letters, emails, and call time and meeting follow up.
  • Create and maintain donor files and records in donor database
  • Work with finance department to manage tracking of contribution information and keeping the staff up to date on money received.
  • Maintain and update pledge and expected (forecast) contribution reports.


Major event support:

  • Support event planning, revenue generation, sponsorship, logistics management and production for five Equality Awards galas each year (500-1,200 guests each), plus additional smaller events as scheduled.
  • Work collaboratively with development director and team members to exceed revenue goals for each event.
  • Support event planning and participate in production meetings and discussions.
  • Organize and collaborate with the development team on event concept, graphic design and production.
  • Collaborate with development team to secure honorees and speakers for events, and work with director on program run of show, script, speeches and rehearsals.
  • Help secure volunteers, and support management of staff and volunteers working at the event.
  • Assist on room layouts/seating arrangements for each event as necessary.
  • Support on-site production and clean up for events as necessary.
  • Support invitation, registration and attendee check-in processes.
  • Assist follow-up with pledge collections, vendors and sponsors after each event.


Additional event and non-event related administrative responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain accurate records in the donor database, including pledges, payments and other donor information.
  • Assist with preparing budgets and provide periodic progress reports to staff directors for each event or project.
  • Keep track of event finances including check requests, invoicing, collections and reporting.
  • Research venue options, coordinate appointments and visits to see venue space, and schedule events on the calendar.
  • Prepare and modify event contracts as requested and submit for director review and approval.


Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from accredited university required
  2. 3-5 years development experience required
  3. Experience working with non-profits or political organizations preferred
  4. Extreme attention to detail as well as time management and multi-tasking ability
  5. Experience with budget management strongly preferred
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism
  8. Proficiency in MS Office Programs including Excel and Word is required
  9. Experience working with Blue State Digital and/or ROI a plus
  10. Ability to prioritize and handle variety of projects simultaneously
  11. Passion and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBT community as well as advancing equality and social justice generally
  12. Commitment to working across lines of difference including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age
  13. Ability to work effectively both individually and in a team in a fast-paced environment
  14. Sense of humor and self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit are a plus

This full time position will be based out of our Los Angeles office and will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as occasional travel within the region. Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage, but must have a car and be able to drive within the region.
