The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a Specialist, Advocacy, Clean Air join our incredible team in the California Region. Working as a member of the Advocacy and Public Policy Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy.
In this role, you will be responsible for supporting air quality and climate change work in the California legislative and regulatory process to carry out the Lung Association’s mission. Serve as a key contact for policy leaders and providing testimony on numerous bills and agency proposals. Provide content knowledge for the organization on a wide range of air quality issues including climate change, heavy-duty diesel pollution, zero emission vehicle programs and renewable energy. Assist with developing opportunities for constituents (especially patient, health professionals, and those impacted by air quality) to engage and share their voice in the public policy process. This is a grant-funded position.
Policy Development & Advocacy
- Develop and maintain relationships with policy leaders in the Central Valley region from the Legislature, Air District and other agencies.
- Meet with key policy leaders in the Legislature, California Air Resources Board and other agencies, write and submit position letters and materials, present testimony and advocate the Lung Association’s positions.
- Assist the Director, Advocacy, Clean Air and the Communications & Media Advocacy Teams to prepare the State of the Air (SOTA) report for the media, the general public and opinion leaders, helping with materials, and serving as key spokesperson for Lung Association.
- Work with Director, Advocacy, Clean Air to provide guidance to local advocacy staff on a market level air quality policy projects, including providing policy guidance, strategic direction, materials, and other information.
- Work with public policy directed coalitions in the region and at the state level that help us advance our mission.
- Collaborate with Director, Advocacy, Clean Air to secure funding to support Lung Association air quality advocacy work. Write and administer grant contracts to ensure that work plans are executed and deliverables completed on a timely basis.
- Collaborate on budget development and implementation
- Work with Director, Advocacy, Clean Air to collaborate with the Patient Advocacy & Grassroots teams and Director, Health Partnerships to provide opportunities, materials and information to engage volunteers in advocacy work.
- Provide timely updates on legislation and the legislative process, analyze and summarize bills for local market advocacy staff and volunteers, and train staff on policy priorities.
- Connect with the Communications team on opportunities for constituent engagement in media.
Mission & Development Support
- Work with local market advocacy staff and Executive Directors to ensure advocacy issues and mission are present at all special events, educational events and other functions.
- Engage VP, Development on potential sponsorships or fundraising opportunities developed out of the advocacy work.
- Together with Director, Advocacy, Clean Air and Communications team to ensure all staff understand the air quality policy priorities, advocacy work and successes.
- Serve on interdivisional teams as assigned.
- Assist in meeting local and state and fundraising goals for Lung Association.
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- At least two years of progressively responsible experience in public policy or advocacy‐related work, community outreach, community organizing and public health advocacy.
- Experience in recruitment/outreach, community organizing experience
- Experience in public speaking.
- Experience in budget management, grant writing and grant management a plus.
- Experience working in a matrix environment a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to work with non-profit organizations, community members, elected officials, city staff, advocates, public health professionals.
- Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately to a diversity of audiences.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Interact effectively and tactfully with all levels of management
- Ability to manage and add value to multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work independently, problem solve, thrive under pressure, perform multiple tasks and meet deadlines
