Position Description

Ariva is seeking a high energy self-directed individual to join our tax team. If you have experience in volunteer programs and want to use your skills to help build wealth and strengthen the financial stability of low- and moderate-income New Yorkers, this is the job for you! We are one of the most established non-profit tax assistance organization in the Bronx. We are and IRS sponsored VITA program and also a Certified Acceptance Agent for ITINs.

Our tax team is composed of 5 full-time year-round staff, dozens of seasonal staff and over a hundred and fifty volunteers. It works closely with Ariva’s financial counseling program to offer comprehensive financial capabilities services to our clients.   The tax program will serve over 8,000 clients next year.

The position is 100% in person and, during the filing season and the months immediately after, tax staff are expected to work evenings and Saturdays.


The Volunteer Coordinator has lead responsibility in volunteer recruitment, training and support for our VITA program. We work with volunteers during the January-April income tax filing season. During those months, the coordinator will focus on onboarding and in-person support of volunteers. The rest of the year, the emphasis is in developing and implementing a volunteer recruitment strategy.

Volunteer Recruitment:

·           Serve as lead staff in developing and implementing an in-person and digital recruitment strategy for new volunteers.

·           Identify and staff volunteer recruitment events throughout the year.

·           Assist with the development, maintenance, and distribution of volunteer informational materials both internally and externally.

·           Promote volunteer opportunities through multiple channels including social media, newsletters, websites and partner organizations.

·           Serve as primary liaison with partner organizations that provide Ariva with volunteers.

·           Serve as primary contact and maintain ongoing communication with prospective volunteers.

Volunteer Orientation & Training:

·           Schedule and facilitate Volunteer Orientations.

·           Prepare and update curriculum and materials for volunteer orientations, including Ariva’s online volunteer training

Volunteer Support & Retention:

·           Provide volunteers with support and guidance, foster a positive environment, establish and maintain strong relationships, encourage volunteer motivation and facilitate on-going connection to Ariva’s mission.

·           Promote volunteerism throughout the organization, not just the tax program. Educate all Ariva staff in establishing good volunteer support and communications.

·           Development and maintain volunteer database.

·           Track volunteer hours, assist with reports as needed.

·           Schedule and coordinate volunteers to staff Ariva tax sites. 

·           Act as a liaison between Ariva staff and volunteers.

·           Serve as volunteers’ point of contact for all projects.

·           Assist with planning volunteer recognition events and incentives.

·           Develop and maintain a welcoming volunteer space at the organization with inspirational and engaging Ariva branding and information on how to stay connected.

·           Provide supervision and feedback to volunteers.

·           Assist with evaluating the volunteer program on an on-going basis, identify gaps, recommend & implement changes, as appropriate

·           Assist with the development and maintenance of volunteer policies and procedures, volunteer manual and online training.


·           Contribute articles, valuable stories and quotes to promote the volunteer program

·           Regularly update all volunteer content including brochures, website, social media, etc.

·           Provide information, storylines and leads for PR with regards to volunteerism

Core Competencies:

·        Experience with volunteer programs or coordinating other group initiatives.

·        Excellent leadership, strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).

·        Ability to motivate and encourage non-paid personnel, and adept at navigating conversations and handling sensitive situations.

·        Desire to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and clients a must

·        Ability to follow directions, work independently, prioritize, follow-up and accomplish a variety of tasks, projects and responsibilities simultaneously in a busy work environment. This position requires excellent time management skills

·        Patience and a positive, customer-friendly attitude

·        Proficiency with MS Office

·        Must be available evening and weekends during the filing season and as needed the rest of the year for volunteer recruitment events.

The following skills are also highly desirable, though not required:

·        Working knowledge of Salesforce

·        Basic tax knowledge

·        Familiarity with teachable
