Description

The Children’s Law Center of Massachusetts (CLCM) seeks an attorney to provide legal advocacy addressing the holistic legal needs of newly arrived children and youth, many of whom may be unaccompanied, and are primarily in Lynn MA and surrounding communities in Essex County. This is an excellent opportunity to join a team of supportive, creative colleagues focused on providing life-changing legal representation for the most vulnerable children and youth. The CLCM is a not-for-profit legal services program that provides legal advocacy to protect and advance the rights of indigent children and youth with matters pertaining to immigration, education, child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice; the agency also represents child victims of crime.

The Opportunity:  Provide individual client centered legal representation and advocacy to newcomer and unaccompanied children/youth to address their holistic needs including humanitarian immigration relief, education advocacy, medical and mental health advocacy and other areas of life/developmental stability. Practice will encompass matters before MA courts, US Immigration Court, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), administrative bodies, schools etc. Collaborate and engage youth, their families, sponsors, and providers about the rights of immigrant youth including to maximize their life opportunities. Collaborate to engage in systemic advocacy that furthers the interests of child/youth immigrant communities.

Qualifications: Admission to the Massachusetts bar is required. Prior experience representing children; demonstrated legal experience in areas of immigration law, family law, child welfare and other related substantive areas highly valued. Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income children who may have experienced poverty, trauma or discrimination is strongly preferred. Being bilingual/bicultural is highly valued, particularly fluency in Spanish. Ability to advocate in a collaborative style with children and families of diverse backgrounds, cultures. Excellent writing, research, and oral advocacy skills. Strong organizational skills, an ability to multi-task, and to work collaboratively as well as independently. Strong desire to identify creative strategies to address barriers and as outgrowth of direct representation to pursue legal projects with broad impact, and in providing outreach and community legal education.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience starting at $70K.
