Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) represents approximately 30,000 clients per year in a variety of legal proceedings in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense. We also provide legal representation for our clients on a variety of issues, including housing, education, employment and wide-reaching immigration legal services. We are one of the largest public defense providers in New York and the United States; representing people who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and fast-paced setting.

BDS’ Integrated Defense Practice represents clients who have concurrent criminal and child protective proceedings in Criminal Court, Supreme Court and Family Court. The team of attorneys, social workers, and paralegals work closely together to provide comprehensive representation to parents by coordinating defenses in their criminal and child protective proceedings to ensure the best outcomes for clients and their families.

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks an attorney with experience representing clients in criminal proceedings and/or Article Ten proceedings in Family Court. The attorney will be expected to attend a formal training in either criminal law or family law based on prior training and experience.

Under the general supervision of a Supervising Attorney, the attorney works alongside social workers, and paralegals to provide legal advocacy and representation to clients whose open criminal court cases lead to the involvement of the Administration for Children’s Services.

Responsibilities

• Engage in the direct representation of clients with criminal and family court cases, appearing on both matters.

• Work closely with social workers and out of court advocates to provide comprehensive assistance with services necessary to keep the client’s family together or to reunify.

• Prepare and litigate hearings and trials in criminal and family court.

• Access criminal defense resources, such as investigators and mitigation-focused social workers.

• Utilize BDS resources, such as housing, immigration, and education attorneys to assist clients.

• Work in a team of attorneys and social workers with dual expertise in family and criminal court and participate in meetings and trainings with the goal of growing the team’s cross-practice expertise.

• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Admission to the New York State bar or eligible to become admitted required

• At least three years of trial court experience representing clients in criminal court and/or child protective proceedings.

• Willingness to learn a new practice area in order to provide integrated representation.

• Creative and innovate strategist with a demonstrated interest in cross-practice issues.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to work independently and in a team setting.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage scheduling cases in both criminal and family court.

• Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines and emergencies.
