Digital Campaigner

Freedom Forward

Position Status: Full-time; 6 month term; renewable based on performance

Location: Remote / U.S.

Start Date: Hiring now.

Compensation: $60,000-$75,000 depending on experience

About Freedom Forward:

Freedom Forward seeks a world in which all people have the benefit of living in societies that are anchored in democracy and respect for human rights. Freedom Forward seeks an end to U.S. support for dictators and nondemocratic governments. We envision a world in which U.S. foreign policy is fully aligned with the hopes and aspirations of people who desire freedom. You can read more about us here.

Freedom Forward is a fiscally-sponsored project of the Center for International Policy in Washington DC.

About the Campaign:

The U.S. government has long maintained alliances with repressive and non-democratic governments across the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Israel.  Freedom Forward is working to end U.S. support for these brutal governments through focused campaigns that push for an end to political, military, business, and civil society relationships between the U.S. and these governments.

About the Digital Campaigner position:

The Digital Campaigner will lead online campaigns to mobilize Freedom Forward activists and the general public to put pressure on diplomats, politicians, corporations, and civil society organizations to end their relationships with repressive and nondemocratic governments.

The Digital Campaigner is responsible for writing compelling emails, petitions, and social media posts that empower large numbers of people to stand up for freedom. The Digital Campaigner will work with the Campaign Director and Executive Director to make strategic and tactical campaign decisions to help end U.S. and western support for nondemocratic governments.

Responsibilities:

  • Write compelling, well-documented emails that motivate members to take a range of actions to end Western support for repressive and antidemocratic governments (i.e. call on Members of Congress to end arms sales, urge corporations to stop doing business with dictators, donate to our campaigns, etc).
  • Build “ladders of engagement” that enable activists and supporters to deepen their involvement in our campaigns, starting with online petitions and moving to offline actions that include phone calls, pressure on selected targets, protests, media, and more.
  • Manage and build the Freedom Community, a growing network of Freedom Forward activists and supporters. Write and send communications, recruitment, and follow-up emails, and co-lead Freedom Community calls.
  • Train, coach, and develop interns, volunteers, and activists who may participate in or support key campaigns.
  • Build a portfolio of campaign targets and lead phone calls, emails, and other forms of public pressure on targets (i.e. corporations, Members of Congress, lobbying firms).
  • Utilize the full range of available tools—including, but not limited to, our email system, petitions, and database—and keep learning as new campaign and public engagement tools come into existence, or as you devise new tactics yourself.
  • Monitor metrics like reach and engagement related to Freedom Forward’s social media platforms, and analyze which content performs best, and why.
  • Follow breaking news coverage to find compelling content that we could elevate via Freedom Forward’s social media networks.
  • Curate strong, viral content from other sources including allies’ pages, and services like CrowdTangle.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • A genuine passion and commitment to human rights, organizing, and empowering members to take leadership.
  • Online / digital campaigning: Experience with online strategies and platforms for recruiting, engaging, and mobilizing large numbers of people. Proficiency in online petition and organizing platforms, including Action Network and major third-party petition platforms, such as MoveOn, Change.org, etc. Proficient in major online marketing and social media platforms.
  • Strong email and petition writing skills for multiple audiences.
  • Experience organizing volunteers online and over the phone.
  • Proven track record of leading effective trainings and organizing meetings.
  • Experience leading campaigns that mobilize people and make change in the world
  • Experience using technology-based organizing tools and petition sites, such as Action Network, as well as Google suite tools and Zoom
  • Simple graphic design capacity, using Adobe suite, Canva, or other tools.
  • Operations mindset: Comfortable building systems to measure and track success. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge and interest in Middle East politics, societies, and/or current events.
  • Familiarity with working with Middle Eastern communities and diaspora networks. Arabic language proficiency or fluency is a plus, but not a requirement.
  • Commitment to and interest in human rights, social justice, and corporate social responsibility.
  • Motivation and ability to work remotely and independently.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail.
  • Fire in the belly. You have an inspiring vision for and story about winning human rights victories, and you use this to motivate others to take action.
  • Courage. We are challenging repressive governments and powerful interests that use violence to maintain power. The ideal candidate is comfortable pushing oppressive entities and their enablers to change their behavior. The ideal candidate must also be very comfortable challenging the positions of U.S. officeholders, whether they are Republicans or Democrats.
