The Opportunity

Essie Justice Group (Essie) is building grassroots power to dismantle the US incarceration system, the most egregious creator of racial and gender injustice of our time. We are a loving and powerful community of women with incarcerated loved ones and include cisgender women, transgender women, formerly incarcerated women, gender nonconforming people, elders, and young people.

Building a sustainable grassroots institution that can be leveraged in the fight for a Black Feminist future is a priority at Essie. Through the development of thoughtful organizing models, a vibrant organizational culture, and scalable structure our aim is to break the isolation of the 1 in 4 women who have loved ones behind bars and sustain bold decarceration advocacy through the leadership of women with loved ones behind bars. After seven years building an active membership across California, Essie is waging ever more ambitious campaigns to divest from state-sponsored punitive control and invest in structures that support the self-determination, freedom, and dignity of Black women and gender nonconforming people.

As the opportunities to communicate our unique politic and movement impact continue to grow, we are seeking a creative and visionary Graphic Designer with a commitment to Black feminist abolition work to join our team.

At Essie, beautiful and purposeful visual storytelling brings energy and voice to our mission and work. The Graphic Designer will craft visuals that spark belief and action in our transformative and revolutionary work. Because their work is often the first impression people have of our organization, the Graphic Designer must be inspiring and intuitive in the visual stories we tell. This key team member will approach their organizational responsibilities with artisticness and attention to detail, enabling Essie’s narratives about women with incarcerated loved ones and long-term strategy to be amplified.

Start date: January 10, 2022.

Position open until filled.

Core Responsibilities

Graphic Design: Develop creative and compelling member-centered graphics that uplift the organization’s core priorities.

  • Design collateral for Essie initiatives including social media, email design, web assets, flyers, event posters, reports, and more.
  • Coordinate photography and videography as needed.
  • Champion Essie’s brand and style guide, evidenced through on-brand pieces that contribute to growing Essie’s brand awareness.
  • Coordinate with graphic designer firms when needed for large-scale projects.
  • Maintain Essie’s Canva templates and serve as a resource for staff members who utilize the platform.
  • Champion new and trending best practice approaches. Make recommendations to Communications Manager and Director of Communications and Partnerships as needed on ways to level up our approaches.
  • Maintain a strong archival system for our visual assets including Smugmug and Google Drive.

Who We’re Looking For

Ideal Qualifications

  • 2-4 years experience in graphic design in a related field (experience in social justice or nonprofit work preferred).
  • Track record as a collaborative team member who excels in coordinating multiple projects, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced and non-traditional work environment.
  • Expertise in email marketing platforms, social media platforms, with a pulse on emerging communications tools and trends.
  • Experience in photography or videography strongly preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Mac operating systems, Photoshop, InDesign, Canva, Wordpress, Google Suite, and MS Office Suite (especially Excel and Word).
  • Commitment to the beliefs and values of Essie with a demonstrated passion for progressive politics, specifically in gender justice, race justice and ending mass incarceration.

Qualities

  • An imaginative, optimistic designer. You are someone who views your craft as a tool to dream up new ways of seeing our world. Because of your core belief in the work, you approach design with a posture of hopefulness, sparking excitement in others to join us in our Black feminist future.
  • A “roll up your sleeves” Team Player. You are someone who enjoys springing into action with your colleagues to make big dreams a reality. You understand that bringing our unique values and politic to light is a process with those around you. Because of your ability to balance process, deadlines, and the ebb and flow of creative work, you are able to navigate the complexity of projects gracefully.
  • Sees #Woke as a verb. You are committed to continuously deepening and evolving your own understanding of systems of oppression through study, openness, and humility. And you easily recognize your own relationship to privilege and power, examining and shifting your behaviors as appropriate.
  • Uplifting and additive. You see mistakes as opportunities for growth; problems as catalysts for solutions, and inspire others along the journey. You carry a positive approach, can-do attitude, a sense of humor, and authentic kindness wherever you go.
