Are you passionate about empowering youth through the arts? We are looking to fill Art Specialist positions in organizations such as Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD). As an Art Specialist you will help pilot their organization’s afterschool studio art programs at one of the community centers in South Hayward (Weekes). You will periodically connect arts to their nature and parks programs through special workshops when they have them for families at their Sulfur Creek Nature Center (animal care) and Shoreline Center (wetlands conservation). In your role, you will create educational lessons that focus on studio art subjects like ceramics, painting/drawing, sculpture, drama, and dance while also responding to significant needs students face relating to social, emotional, and behavioral needs. You’ll also gain experience in coordination and arts administrative tasks as they relate to the classes you are delivering to youth. 

What is BAYAC AmeriCorps?

BAYAC AmeriCorps collaborates with schools and community-based organizations to serve youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of AmeriCorps, BAYAC Members commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) term of service in the Bay Area's most high-need communities, working to provide youth with opportunities for meaningful engagement, skill building, and emotional and social development. This is a paid work experience program for folks who are looking to advance their career working with youth and in the field of education. We are hiring folks to serve as after-school educators, classroom aides, academic coaches & mentors, tutors, health educators, case managers, and enrichment activities coordinators.

Position duties may include:

  • Coordinate and deliver activities that enhance social emotional learning
  • Use youth development best practices to plan and implement programming 
  • Build engaging mentoring relationships with youth
  • Encourage outdoor education and recreation
  • Support students/youth in developing the skills they need to be successful in school and life
  • Provide homework and academic support for program participants at school sites
  • Provide case management, referrals, and independent living skills for clients at community based sites
  • Plan and facilitate youth focused lesson plans and activities
  • Promote a safe and positive learning environment
  • Actively supervise and ensure student/youth safety at all times
  • Model positive attitudes, behaviors, and language
  • Communicate regularly with the site coordinator and regional supervisor
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and reporting procedures
  • Attend and participate in weekly training and cohort meetings

Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • At least 17 years old
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week) and commit to an 11-month term of service
  • Successful completion of TB test and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
  • Prefer to have 48 college credits completed
  • Prefer bilingual in Spanish/English, not required
