Job Title: Interim Staff Attorney
Job Status: Temporary (approximately Feb – Aug 2026)
Hours: Full-Time or part-time
Classification: Exempt
Location: Remote in California (travel required)
Reports to: Legal Director
CRPE is a non-profit environmental justice organization based in Delano, California that provides legal and technical assistance to the grassroots movement for environmental justice. We combine community organizing, legal representation, policy advocacy and coalition building to help build healthy sustainable communities in low-income communities and communities of color. CRPE’s attorneys collaborate with community organizers to support and work with low-income communities and communities of color to address health disparities, environmental inequity, and discriminatory regulatory and land-use practices by providing educational, technical, and legal resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with community groups, organizers, and other attorneys to develop and support community-based, community-led legal strategies.
- Provide legal representation to residents and grassroots groups in low-income communities and communities of color in Kern and Tulare Counties.
- Train community residents to effectively participate before decision-makers in administrative proceedings in anticipation of litigation.
- Participate in and collaborate with social and environmental justice networks and other organizations as necessary to advance community legal strategies.
- Other duties, including administrative responsibilities, as may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- J.D. and admission to the California Bar.
- 2-3 years of litigation experience, ideally in environmental law and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
- Ability to work effectively with residents, organizers, communitybased organizations
- , allied organizations, and other attorneys to develop and support community-based, community-led legal strategies.
- Excellent legal research and writing skills.
- Demonstrated competency in working with people with different social identities than themselves (including race, gender, sexual orientation, age, class, and disability).
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team player, including remotely.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and take initiative to complete complex projects.
- Detail-oriented, ability to prioritize and follow through with multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
- Ability to travel occasionally (1-2 times per month)
