Summary: The Safe Horizon DV Shelter Program provides safe and confidential spaces for DV Survivors and their children.  We are committed to providing these services with empathy, compassion, professionalism, non-judgement, and respect. Our spaces respect survivors’ right to self-determination and focus on giving families and individuals the space, both emotional and physical, to heal from the victimization and trauma they have experienced.


The Children’s Services Specialist position provides structured, educational, day, evening and weekend support and enrichment opportunities to children living with a parent in a domestic violence shelter.  Under the supervision of the Supervising Social Worker, the Children’s Services Specialist is also responsible for the overall management of the childcare play area when present in the facility.  The ages of the children can range from infancy to 16 years of age. Guided by lesson plans and activities planned by the Children’s Services Specialist, the Childcare Workers and Children’s Services Specialist lead and facilitate supportive, educational activities with the children in their care. 


Responsibilities:

  • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients. Coach and guide staff in their client practice that reflects these approaches.
  • Responsible for overall functioning of the childcare area, and serving as a positive role model for children
  • Work with children from infancy to 16 years of age in a supportive, educationally-oriented environment that serves children in a shelter setting; includes positive interaction with children during play, meals, chores;
  • Develop and implement a structured routine, curriculum, and lesson plan within the framework of the monthly theme provided by Supervising Social Worker for children in the shelter;
  • Provide Supervising Social Worker with observations of children’s behavior;
  • Maintain registry of all children in the care of the childcare area;
  • Make referrals and connections to parents to take advantage of other Safe Horizon programs, other community-based organizations, programs, and entitlements;
  • Ensure funder intake forms, registration forms, statistics, and other required forms are filled out accurately, thoroughly, and submitted on a timely basis;
  • Engaging with school age children and language development for pre-school children by speaking with the children and by planning, administering, and overseeing children’s activities, including, but not limited to: stories, use of computer software, educational toys and games, arts and crafts, dance, and writing;

 

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years experience working with children and/or young adults in some capacity;
  • Must be able to become certified in child/infant CPR and first aid;
