    Location

    The United States Virgin Islands is divided into two island districts. Successful applicants generally have the option of stating a preference for the St. Thomas/St. John District or the St. Croix District.

    Salary

    Salary will be determined by the pay scale of the Assistant Attorneys General Collective Bargaining Agreement, which is graded according to years of active practice with a range of $92,000 - $129,960.

    Description

    Work in this class is performed under established rules, policies, and procedures under the direction of the Attorney General. The successful applicant is, however, expected to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the position.

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Litigate and otherwise advocate on environmental matters important to the United States Virgin Islands, including environmental justice, clean energy hazardous waste, climate change mitigation, and water purification, in state and federal courts before administrative agencies.
    • Perform advanced legal work, including conducting in-depth analysis and preparing legal memoranda; interpreting laws and regulations; providing legal advice to state administrative agencies represented by the DOJ; and preparing legal notices, briefs, comment letters, and other litigation and advocacy papers.
    • Coordinate within the DOJ and other outside entities on environmental justice, clean energy, climate change, and other environmental issues.
    • Participate in legal skills and practice area training.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited law school, having earned an LLB or J.D. degree, and admission to practice before the highest court of any state or territory.     Required Knowledge and Skills

    • Applicants who have experience with environmental justice, clean energy, climate change, or other environmental issues are preferred (including internships or clinical experience). Other legal experience and entry-level attorneys with a demonstrated interest in these areas will also be considered.
    • Ability to work with partner organizations and to help build coalitions.
    • Excellent writing, editing, research, and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work well and enthusiastically within a team in a fast-paced environment.
    • Initiative-taking with strong organizational skills and the ability to self-manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
    • Demonstrated interest in public service.
