The American Littoral Society is a nonprofit, membership-based organization headquartered on Sandy Hook in Highlands, NJ. The American Littoral Society promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same. We are offering three summer internship opportunities based out of Sandy Hook National Recreation Area. 

Job Description:

The American Littoral Society is seeking a part-time Education Director to work out of our Sandy Hook, NJ office. The position will involve managing projects that educate students and the public on concepts related to coastal and marine science and ecology , natural history and conservation issues such as environmental protection and coastal resiliency. Duties include teaching marine science concepts both in the classroom and in the field, and managing programming This is a 25-hour per week position. The pay is $18 per hour. This position is not eligible for benefits. Some weekend work required.


- Coordinate with local schools to bring programming into elementary, middle, and high school classrooms

- Deliver programs that foster in and out-of-classroom learning experiences and lead to an increased understanding and appreciation of coastal processes and conservation issues

- Lead walks and field trips that educate the public about coastal ecology and local flora and fauna

- Coordinate volunteer events such as beachgrass plantings and the annual BioBlitz

- Coordinate, market, and manage registration for field trips

- Manage summer camp program

Manage summer interns



- A bachelor’s degree with a focus in ecology, environmental science, marine biology, or a related field

- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience

- Strong knowledge of coastal processes with ability to identify local flora and fauna preferred

- Excellent communication skills, and a passion for sharing knowledge with students of all ages

- Passionate about protecting and conserving New Jersey’s coastal natural resources

- Available to work flexible hours, some weekends and evenings required

- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

- An excellent time manager and project-oriented
