Job Reports to: Director of Organizing

Salary Range: ~$55k


The Manhattan Organizer works with people and neighborhood leaders throughout “Lower” Manhattan – from 125th Street to Battery Park -- to organize support for measures that make the streets safer for walking, biking and mass transit. 

This position requires a self-motivated and energetic person to coordinate campaigns that will make Manhattan’s streets safer and more accessible for people to walk, ride bikes, and take mass transit. The ideal candidate should be familiar with current local and city politics, Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative, have experience in political and/or community organizing and have a strong affinity for the mission of Transportation Alternatives.Night and weekend work will be required to attend community board meetings, facilitate activist committee meetings, and meet with local community groups and stakeholders.  


Major Responsibilities

  • Activist leadership development and meeting facilitation
  • Field organizing and new activist recruitment 
  • Manhattan campaign administration and progress tracking
  • Public Speaking and coalition building
  • Interfacing with local elected officials
  • Event planning and mobilization, including emergency actions
  • Help draft communications regarding planned events
  • Draft action alerts, write phone and canvas scripts


Specific Responsibilities:

Leadership Development and Meeting Facilitation

  • Facilitate monthly Manhattan Activist Committee meeting
  • Develop leadership among existing volunteer activists, including leadership structures within each of the four to six committee campaigns and one-on-one meetings with key activists
  • Field questions from activists on an on-going basis

Field Organizing and Recruitment

  • In collaboration with Director of Organizing, oversee progress and success of four to six priority campaigns
  • Conduct outreach to recruit volunteers to be a part of transforming streets in their community through attending and hosting public meetings, canvassing, phone banking, conducting targeted online recruitment campaigns, social media and other methods
  • Develop relationships with key political players and opinion leaders, as well as allied organizations
  • Participate in coalitions with other organizations
  • Attend community board meetings and speak as a representative of Transportation Alternatives
  • Create campaign strategy documents

Campaign Administration and Tracking

  • Manage Committee Google Group and Facebook page
  • Track progress on campaigns and take part in quarterly goals reporting
  • Update Manhattan petition pages
  • Follow through with necessary tasks involved in pulling constituent lists, phone banking lists, and writing and producing e-mails


Qualifications

  • 2 or more years of experience in organizing or campaigning with a strong background in advocacy and/or grassroots organizing
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet goals and deadlines while working independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to build trust and maintain relationships with dozens of community partners
  • Experience developing and executing social media engagement strategies across various platforms 
  • Strong communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
  • Extensive knowledge of Manhattan neighborhoods
  • Commitment to social justice 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (Spanish or Chinese)
  • Basic Adobe InDesign knowledge
