The mission of the Center for Land-Based Learning is to inspire, educate, and cultivate future generations of farmers, agricultural leaders and natural resource stewards. We achieve this mission by providing experiential education programs for high school students (the SLEWS, Caring for our Watersheds, and FARMS Leadership Programs) and a beginning farmer training and development program (the California Farm Academy). These model programs provide hands-on experiences through which participants develop leadership skills and create connections to environmental, agricultural, and food system careers. Our programs span 27 California counties and reach over

2,000 people each year.


Job Summary

The Center for Land-Based Learning is seeking a full-time Controller. This position reports to the Director of Operations and works closely with the Office Manager, Program Directors/Managers, and Chief Executive Officer.


The Controller will oversee the organization’s finances, budgets, month-end closing, accounting processes and all tax related functions as well as create GAAP compliant financial statements. They will coordinate and be part of the Administration team and collaborate with CLBL’s Program Directors/Managers. The ideal, well-qualified Controller will have 5+ years of progressive senior level finance and accounting experience with non-for-profits.  


The position will be based out of the Center for Land-Based Learning’s office at 40140 Best Ranch Road, Woodland, CA.


Responsibilities

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

●  Responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities including transaction entry, month-end close, journal entries, and bank account reconciliation.

●  Work with Board members and lead the Finance Committee.

●  Develop and maintain accurate financial statements and reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as required by the Finance Committee and to be presented for Board member approval, and work closely with the Board Treasurer and Director of Operations.

●  Manage cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts.

●  Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements to keep senior management informed. 

●  Create annual budget in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer, and Directors.

●  Track financial budget and compare to actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.

●  Work with external accountant to coordinate the annual audit/review and 990 filing and prepare all supporting information.

●  Ensure compliance with fiscal statutory requirements. This includes maintaining charitable tax-exempt status, sales and use tax compliance, payroll reporting and related tax compliance and

information return compliance (i.e. annual 990-tax filing, 1099 reporting, W-2 forms, CA SI-100, Form 5500) and any other local and state reporting compliance.

●  Supervise and support accounting staff including goal setting and performance management.

●  Safeguard fiscal resources and adhere to all internal control policies and procedures designed to prevent and detect theft and misuse of funds.

●  Other duties as assigned.


Desired Attributes:

●  Dedicated professional with experience managing and leading who has the ability to perform a wide variety of complex and specialized accounting work.

●  Substantial experience in audit compliance, and a thorough understanding of GAAP, payroll administration, financial analysis, management of actual to budget reporting system, and non-for-profit financial accounting.

●  Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate policies and guidelines effectively, both written and verbal.

●  Ability to deal with ambiguity and the willingness to explore exceptions and options.

●  Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

●  Ability to work independently, exercise judgement, approach work proactively and with a customer service focus, and strong organizational skills.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be passionate about the mission and work of CLBL. Ideally experience in working in non-profit accounting. Experience working with an organizational budget of $1.8 million,

and growing. In addition, they will possess the following experience, skills and personal attributes:

●  Bachelor’s Degree: Required

●  Five or more years of management-level non-profits accounting responsibility.

●  CPA certification is a plus

●  Strong computer skills, specifically in Excel, Google Suite, and Word

●  Experience working with QuickBooks preferred

●  Experience working with ADP is a plus.

●  Excellent communication, interpersonal, relationship and

team building skills.

●  Passionate about working in or supporting non-profit organizations

●  Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
