Organizational Description

The Fund for Educational Excellence (Fund) is a nonprofit local education fund working to expand resources, identify and accelerate solutions, and recognize excellence so that all children in Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) experience an effective and equitable education. The Fund seeks to play a role in undoing decades of racially unjust policies that continue to have negative ramifications on the students who attend City Schools.

The Fund accomplishes this by securing philanthropic support for important projects within City Schools, researching the effects of policy on students and family while advancing community driven recommendations, and promoting excellence inside of schools. The Fund also serves as a fiscal sponsor to community groups, charitable nonprofits and private foundations. Fiscal sponsor services include: grant/project management, payroll/human resources, budgeting, financial reporting, audit/990 management, procurement and thought partnership. 

Position Description

The Director of Finance (DOF) is a new position at the Fund, created in response to significant growth over the past three years, with projected continued growth. DOF will be a hands-on position responsible for the accurate and timely management of accounting services to support the Fund and its fiscally sponsored clients. DOF will have a working relationship with the Director of Grants Management, Human Resources, and will provide a customer service approach to interacting with our internal and external fiscally sponsored clients. DOF reports to the Chief Financial Officer. DOF supervises one Finance Associate. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

DOF will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all financial systems, ensuring accurate and timely monthly closes and adherence to internal controls and financial policies. DOF will assist in developing and maintaining adequate financial policies to comply with best-practices and grant compliance. DOF is a leadership position and will be a thought-partner to the CFO.

Account Payable Process

·       Manage multi-step and multi-staff AP process – from AP submission to cash disbursement

·       Manage vendor experience, database, communications and 1099 processing

·       Manage and maintain link between AP system (bill.com) and QuickBooks Desktop

·       Manage and maintain link between American Express, reconciliation system (Tallie) and QuickBooks Desktop

·       Monitor internal controls and coding consistency during AP process

·       Act as a knowledge resource to staff and fiscal clients on AP process

Account Receivable Process

·       Manage multi-step and multi-staff AR process – from AR booking to cash receipt

·       Act as a knowledge resource to staff and fiscal clients on nonprofit revenue recognition, including multi-year pledges, government grants and contracts, and fee-for-service contracts

·       Manage merchant service accounts and monthly booking

·       Prepare bank deposits

Budgeting Process

·       Coordinate with Director of Grants Management on budgeting tools and instructions

·       Review and advise clients and staff on grant budgets prior to submissions

Other Duties and Responsibilities

·       Prepare monthly financial reports for the CFO (Balance Sheet, Budget-to-Actuals, Cash Flow, Projections, etc.)

·       Manage monthly close process

·       Assist Director of Grants Management in standardizing the client monthly reports

·       Assist CFO in annual audit, Form 990 and compliance reporting

·       Journal Entry oversight, uploading into QuickBooks Desktop, compliance and standardization

·       QuickBooks Desktop Account and Class management

·       Research trends, processes, best practices, staff training and technology in support of CFO initiatives

·       Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

·       Bachelor’s degree or higher in Finance or Accounting. See Experience below if your degree is not in Finance or Accounting.

Experience

·       Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in nonprofit accounting. More experience, especially in duties similar to the ones listed above, can offset a degree in another subject area.

Skills/Competencies

·       Experience with QuickBooks Desktop, or another accounting system

·       Experience with bill.com AP system preferred but not required

·       Familiarity with exporting and manipulating large data sets in Excel

·       Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the nonprofit finance field

·       Process and systems oriented

·       Basic understanding of fiscal sponsorship models

·       High ethical standards and values

·       Superior analytical skills with an eye for quality

·       Strong attention to detail with an ability to cross-check work before submission

·       Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

·       Exceptional customer service skills

·       Ability to balance competing deadlines and be flexible to multiple priorities based on client needs.

·       Understanding of and commitment to fight against systematic racial inequities

 Compensation

The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $100,000 annually. A comprehensive benefits package is provided.
