TITLE: Postsecondary Advisor- Middle School

REPORTS TO: Senior Coordinator, Middle School Programs

FLSA STATUS: Part-Time; Hourly; Non-Exempt

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Snider Hockey is a nationally acclaimed non-profit that uses the sport of hockey to educate and empower the under-resourced youth of Philadelphia to prosper in the game of life. Evidence-based outcomes are young citizens who:

• Achieve academic success as they matriculate from Crayons through College;
• Consistently make healthy and thoughtful life choices;
• Serve as positive role models to the next generation of Snider Hockey student-athletes;
• Realize gainful and rewarding employment; and
• Give back to their community.

The Postsecondary Advisor will serve as a resource for Snider Hockey middle school students and their families. Postsecondary Advisors must support them throughout the high school application and selection process. Additionally, they will help students find, prepare, and apply for opportunities in education. The Advisor plays a vital role in spreading our core values of education, responsibility, hard work, and giving back. The successful candidate will take pride in mentoring participants to become productive citizens who pursue rigorous secondary education and give back to their communities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Knowledge or willingness to learn about Philadelphia high school application processes
• Experience working with middle school students and/or parents/guardians of school-aged children
• Advanced computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Working knowledge of Salesforce or other CRM systems is helpful, but not mandatory
• Knowledge of and experience working with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds
• Applicants must be able to pass background checks and Pennsylvania clearances

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Create a resource-rich environment for students and families as it pertains to high school selection information
• Plan and conduct information sessions, campus tours, school fairs, and workshops on essay writing, scholarships, and financial aid
• Collect and monitor student data including test scores, high school application information, scholarships applied, high school acceptance and scholarships received
• Help students select schools of interest and fit, and complete applications
• Assist students to identify and apply for scholarships and complete the financial aid process
• Be an essential member of the Snider Hockey team, which may include but is not limited to planning and supporting activities and events

INTELLECTUAL AND SOCIAL DEMANDS:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. The position requires constant attention to precise details and specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than three steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee constantly operates a computer and other office devices such as telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc. Occasionally moves about inside office space to access storage areas, cabinets, and office machinery. Occasionally does local driving in support of work-related projects. Occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or moving up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The essential responsibilities of this position are performed indoors, mainly at ice hockey rinks but including occasional visits to the office and special event sites (indoor/outdoor in the weather conditions prevalent at the time). The noise level in the work environments can range from moderate to loud during events/programs and is minimal during non-event/program times.

SCHEDULE:

Most work is completed during after-school/evening hours. There may also be opportunities to work standard work hours and/or weekend duties in the Greater Philadelphia area. Hours will vary weekly, based on seasonal student needs and requirements. No specific number of hours is guaranteed each pay period.
