Human Rights Watch (HRW) advances human rights worldwide by investigating wrongs, exposing facts, offering solutions, and challenging those with power to respect rights. The Media Department, which includes the Communications, Digital, Multimedia and Campaign divisions, creates and implements communications strategies to expand support for human rights, increase media coverage and influence in key markets, and reach new audiences.

The Digital Division is seeking a Web Developer to work on HRW’s Drupal 8 website, provide technical support for web-based projects, and support the digital team’s strategy. This is a one-year, fixed term position with the possibility of extension dependent on funding. The position will preferably be based in New York, but any location with an overlapping time zone may be considered.; Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate will be required to work remotely in the interim. This position reports to the Digital Director, based in Toronto. 


1. Implement and deploy new features to HRW’s Drupal 8 website;

2. Work with the digital team and editors to troubleshoot coding issues and fix website bugs

3. Provide technical advice and support for online-based projects; assist in the roll-out of major projects;

4. Respond quickly to reports that a webpage or pages is down or inaccessible to the public;

5. Contribute to the digital team’s efforts to innovate and evolve, including strategy, mobile trends, new frontend features and tools that might help further our goals;

6. Working closely with the core web team to support systems and code maintenance, testing, and deploying code to production;

7. Carry out any other tasks as required, including working with vendors and supporting security efforts.


Education: A bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of work and educational experiences (either at traditional post-secondary institutions or bootcamp-style learning environments) is required. 

Experience: A minimum of 3 years of mixed frontend and backend web development and infrastructure support experience, with an emphasis in Drupal 8 CMS. Full stack LAMP knowledge and Drupal 8 is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Proficiency with Drupal 8 and proven examples of module and theme development; experience with multilingual websites a plus;

2. Proficiency with Twig templates + PatternLab, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and HTML;

3. Experience with responsive websites and frontend developing for page speed performance is required;

4. Familiarity with development tools, such as Git, Drush, Lando, Composer, Npm, Yarn;

5. Experience with hosted Drupal/WordPress vendors like Pantheon; 

6. Experience with Unix OS and Content Delivery Networks a plus;

7. Familiarity with backup procedures and deploying code to production;

8. Strong adherence to security, accessibility and performance best practices;

9. Strong adherence to coding standards and documentation;

10. Ability to work in a demanding, diverse, and fast-paced environment both independently and as a member of a team is required. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW.
