Description

The Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Teachers College, Columbia University, conducts rigorous research on expanding access to higher education and promoting success for all students. We are seeking an associate editor who will work closely with our researchers to ensure that all of our publications are of the highest quality.

 

The associate editor will be involved in all phases of publication production, from initial manuscript edit to final proofread to design. We’re looking for someone with impeccable grammar who can critique an academic paper from top to bottom and can serve as a writing resource for our staff. The position reports to the center’s Communications Director. 

 

This is a full-time position based in New York City. Applications must include a cover letter, resume, and academic writing sample that ideally demonstrates familiarity with the social sciences and statistical concepts. Applicants who are selected for further review will be required to complete a proofreading test and an editing/writing exercise.

 

If you have less experience than desired but are frequently called on by your peers to edit their academic work, we encourage you to apply. Exceptional candidates who do not meet all the requirements may be considered for a position as assistant editor.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Format, proofread, edit, and revise papers, reports, briefs, proposals, and other material. (40%)
  • Review publication layouts for errors, style inconsistencies, and adherence to brand standards. (10%)
  • Liaison with authors, reviewers, and designers to coordinate all phases of publication production. (10%)
  • Provide feedback and guidance for writers during manuscript development. (10%)
  • Write and edit research summaries, web content, electronic newsletter items, and other material. (10%)
  • Post content to CCRC’s websites. (10%)
  • Assist research and communications staff with project-related tasks. (10%)

 

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • 3–5 years editing experience, ideally in social science research content.
  • Strong writing skills and superior understanding of grammar, spelling, and standard style conventions.
  • Ability to understand and edit complex academic prose.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, including track changes and formatting tools.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and to anticipate and meet deadlines. 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience editing academic papers, preferably in social sciences such as sociology and economics.
  • Familiarity with APA style.
  • Experience with web content management.
