Housing Counseling Services, Inc. (HCS) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in 1972   to provide comprehensive counseling, training, advocacy and technical assistance for low and moderate-income homebuyers, homeowners, tenants and the homeless; to help them to achieve successful living in healthy, safe, and affordable homes. Our goal is to prevent homelessness and offer improved housing opportunities by providing the skills, self-esteem and empowerment necessary within families and communities. Further, HCS works to build the individual and group capacity for economic, physical, and social development of homes, neighborhoods and communities.

Housing Counseling Services, Inc. (HCS) has multiple case management openings and is seeking energetic self-starters to provide housing case management and housing navigation services to persons living with HIV (PLWH) in the D.C. Metropolitan region.   

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide case management services on housing, financial, employment, educational and social service issues in order to address and improve their housing stability;
  • Develop housing plans in collaboration with the client, identifying housing and financial barriers and specific tasks to be accomplished that support short and long term housing stability;
  • Conduct regular follow-up with clients to ensure their housing situation remains stable and to assess for additional support services needed;
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with landlords, housing providers, utility service providers, social service agencies, etc.;
  • Engage community based organizations, housing resources, and service providers to identify new and existing housing opportunities;
  • Identify and connect clients with appropriate support services and programs that can further assist the client stabilize their housing situation;
  • Build relationships with landlords and property owners to encourage landlord participation in leasing to HCS participants;
  • Input and update client data into HCS and jurisdictional computer databases;
  • Maintain accurate written and computer based client files;
  • Provide accurate and complete monthly reports detailing service activities and outcomes;
  • Perform other HCS tasks as requested;

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree with specialized professional experience in case management/social work; extensive experience may serve as a substitute for higher education;
  • Bilingual Spanish Speaker
  • Strong ability to work independently and as a team player exercising mature judgment;
  • Highly motivated self-starter with an ability to complete multiple tasks in timely manner;
  • Must have excellent problem solving skills and able to develop innovate solutions;
  • Experience providing supportive services to at-risk populations;
  • Ability to respond to multiple emergency needs with patience and diligence;
  • Must demonstrate the ability to communicate with a variety of professionals including bankers, realtors, contractors, landlords;
  • Must maintain and execute confidential information;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as excellent computer skills;
  • Ability to translate technical information into layman’s terms;
  • Sensitivity to the needs within the community and to individual clients;
