PURPOSE: Manages own work and the work of others to drive SEIU Public Division digital communications and media engagement to support priorities for growth, to involve members and the public in achieving those growth goals, and to brand SEIU as the national and international union within the public sector. This position reports to the Managing Executive Vice President.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Drive communications for campaigns to unite workers in city and state governments, academic settings and other workplaces. The focus is telling one story across multiple campaigns; amplifying workers' voices utilizing SEIU owned media; working with reporters and bloggers to tell workers' stories and utilizing digital tools to amplify workers' voices and multiply the reach of campaigns.

  • Coordinate the development, management, and execution of vibrant and cohesive communications across the Public Division organizing priorities.
  • Helps manage the communications work for the division, including planning, budgeting, and project management, and coordinates with divisions, departments, and field on those issues.
  • Assists with vendor management for division communications work.
  • Helps prepare and monitor division communications budget, including budgets for division campaigns. Recruits, reviews, and recommends hiring for division communications staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of the department.
  • Manages specific tasks of supervised staff through delegation.
  • Edits supervised staff's work to ensure consistency with campaign and SEIU messaging.
  • Ensures supervised staff are completing internal administrative reports.
  • Manages broad responsibilities of supervised staff by defining roles and goals.
  • Manages time of supervised staff so they are available for occasional assignments outside of their core area of responsibility.
  • Helps build a culture of excellence so that supervised staff contribute to the best of their ability.
  • Participates in management training and development programs.
  • Creates structures to manage the day-to-day work of supervised staff.
  • Helps recruit top-quality staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Develops staff to ensure they are learning and growing in their role.
  • Helps retain high-performing staff.
  • Addresses any performance problems of supervised staff.
  • Helps supervised staff retain productive relationships with local and international union staff.
  • Ensures that the supervised staff operate within SEIU's vision, and structures

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduating from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree is preferred, but not required.

At least 5 years of experience in a union, political, or issue-driven environment. An understanding of current issues and conditions for labor unions. Or, a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of SEIU goals, unions or other advocacy organizations.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and perform successfully in a high-pressure and dynamic environment. Ability to interact on a peer-level with senior staff at SEIU, other Unions and with other progressive movement or political partners.
  • Commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive workplace, and skill supporting the work diverse staff teams
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; proven presentation skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement communications strategy.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of judgement and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and approach problem solving in a proactive manner.
  • Ability to work on a team, including collaboration on work projects and assignments.
  • Ability to multitask, establish and meet established deadlines, and to handle and triage large volume of incoming requests.
  • Strong computer skills including the suite of Microsoft Office and Google products

Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in an office setting, but may require work in other settings to perform the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays. Long and irregular hours.
