Youth Ministry at National United Methodist Church seeks to make the love of God visible by addressing the needs of middle school and high school students and maximizing opportunities so that all may grow in strength and wisdom. The Youth Ministries Coordinator will be attentive to the hopes, concerns, and needs of students and their families in the community to determine how the congregation might serve them and how they might serve one another as Christian disciples and good neighbors.

Responsibilities of the Position

 • The coordinator will collaborate with staff, adults, and students to plan and carry out ministry by, with, and for youth. This will include (but is not limited to)

• Re-establishing regular youth group meetings and youth relationships that were disrupted by the

pandemic

• Linking youth to service opportunities with the wider congregation and community

• Encouraging and equipping students for worship leadership through music, drama, reading, and

sharing testimonies.

• Encouraging students to participate in youth Sunday school and working with the Minister of

Discipleship to provide other relevant study opportunities for youth and/or appropriate intergenerational Christian formation activities.

• The coordinator will promote a culture of full inclusion and welcome within the youth ministry.

• The coordinator will promote the understanding of Christian vocation in daily life in work with youth, building understanding of God’s call for all Christians.

• The coordinator will ensure that all youth ministry activities follow the Safe Sanctuaries policies of National United Methodist Church.

• The coordinator will form and guide a leadership team of youth that meets throughout the year to plan all aspects of the ministry.

 • The coordinator will equip parents to be supportive members of the youth ministry team through

regular communication, advance calendar notices, and a minimum of one parent meeting per semester to discuss the ministry.

• The coordinator will oversee project management of the annual Appalachia Service Project, a weeklong summer service trip requiring effective outreach, fundraising, team recruitment, and training.

• The coordinator will raise congregational awareness of the needs and contributions of youth in the community and the world.

• The coordinator will identify and support quality leaders and excellent mentors who encourage youth to develop their own gifts, skills, strengths, and ideas.

• The coordinator will collaborate with community organizations that relate to youth and will seek to connect the congregation with the community for a strong program.

• The coordinator will partner with the church’s communications team on an effective strategy for curating and creating engaging social media content.

Position Requirements:

• A vital Christian faith and desire to share that faith with youth

• Passion for youth ministry, at least two years of prior effective ministry leadership and evidence of active and growing discipleship.

• A basic knowledge of youth development.

• The ability to listen to and communicate with people of all ages and the ability to work with other adults, and students.

• The ability to delegate responsibility and follow up to complete tasks.

 • This leader should show genuine interest in responding to the needs and concerns of youth.

 • To comply with National UMC’s Safe Sanctuaries policy, the coordinator must be at least 23

years old.

• Valid driver’s license

• Ability to pass a comprehensive criminal background check

Helpful Skills:

 • Bachelor’s degree

Working Knowledge of United Methodist theology

• Experience living or working in another culture
