Position Summary:

Children’s Aid (“CA”) is a top-performing child welfare organization in NYC and the 35-person Fiscal Division of CA looks after every dimension of fiscal control and accountability. The organization’s Senior Accountant role within the Accounting group, is an entry to mid-level position for an accounting professional possessing an ability to continue to grow. The role requires starter knowledge and experience in accounting practices, fiscal control standards and basic financial operations for not-for-profit organizations. The position begins with strong financial analytical and computer/software skills and builds upon this foundation with a commitment to further staff development and learning within the accounting area supported by an experienced group of Assistant Controllers and a strong Financial Controller.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Accountant reports directly to one of the organization’s three Assistant Controllers. They support the Controller and Asst. Controller in providing the highest level of fiscal management to the Agency and the broader Fiscal team. They help ensure the accounting system’s ongoing integrity while providing consistent reporting and upholding the policies and procedures established by CA management. Specific tasks and duties include the following:

Contributions Reconciliation:

  • Reconcile the cash/ credit card/ pledge contributions and restricted revenues recorded in the GL to monthly Development reporting.
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge development reports will ensure the documentation supports the GL entries.
  • Prepare year-end audit workingpaper schedules and Form 990 reporting related to contributions.

Private Grants and Fees for Services for Medicaid/ Foster Care:

  • Preparing monthly income journal entries for these service lines and ensure monthly reconciliations are accurate.
  • Audit preparation work for Statewide Standards of Payment (SSOP) and FC Medicaid reporting for foster care.

Property Plant and Equipment – Capital Assets:

  • Ensure proper coding for and location of fixed asset additions and monthly depreciation of fixed assets using the Great Plains Dynamics fixed asset module. 
  • Reconciliation of all fixed assets, accumulated depreciation and rollforward schedules detailing additions/ sale or retiring of assets to true up the accounts.

Debt Reconciliation:

  • Ensure proper payment and recording of entries for semi-annual bond debt payments, amortization of premium, and escrow account balances for two bond series.
  • Reconciliation work and year-end accrual entries.

System Reporting and Maintenance:

  • Support Fiscal and Budget team with updated Financial reporting templates, training and troubleshooting.
  • Developing and running regular and ad hoc financial reports with Management Report Writer, Great Plains Smartlist and Budgeting tools to improve efficiency.
  • Regular system maintenance to check for inconsistencies between system’s GL and Account structure maintenance.
  • Work closely with Fiscal/ Program/ Budget teams to ensure seamless updates of cost centers and GL strings, including the mapping to the categories for financial reporting.
  • Maintaining the Chart of Accounts; adding new cost centers and ensuring correct and consistent usage of accounts.
  • Assisting with maintaining Accounts Payable vendor setup and fully vetting vendor details.

Subsidiary Journal Entries and Due To/From:

  • Review and book due to(from) entries in the central agency ledger and reconcile/match to our subsidiaries.
  • Create intercompany consolidation reporting/eliminations and reconciliation to the subsidiaries.

General Accounting Functions:

  • Support and backup team with account analysis, reporting and journal entry integrations.
  • Preparing monthly journal entries and integrations within the MS Dynamics Great Plains accounting system including payroll, petty cash, OTPS, income etc.
  • Supporting the monthly close process and the year-end close and audit activities.
  • Ensure adherence to and upholding CA policies and procedures.
  • Communicating practices clearly both internally and externally and coordinating with other departments and divisions in collaborative and innovative ways.
  • Participating in committees, special projects and departmental initiatives as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration required; MBA a plus; CPA certification a plus.
  • 1-4 years of progressively responsible professional accounting and/or financial management experience; Non-profit experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of current accounting and financial reporting methods and procedures. Additional training will be provided by Controllership group and mentoring.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), work ethic, and professionalism in engagement with superiors, peers and subordinate staff within CA.
  • Must be well organized and a self-starter as well as detail-oriented, professional and reliable.
  • Intermediate to Advanced level of MS Excel and Word desired.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains accounting system would be preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
