Position Summary

Congregation Rodeph Sholom (CRS) is a welcoming and dynamic Reform synagogue of 1,800 families on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The Development Assistant will handle a diverse range of responsibilities to support the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of congregants at an exciting point in our history. CRS is in the midst of a multi-million dollar capital and endowment campaign in addition to annual fundraising of nearly $2,000,000 through our Yom Kippur Appeal. The Development Assistant is a critical role that manages the day-to-day operations of a busy, three-person department.

We are looking for a self-starter who is poised and articulate, organized and accurate. You’ll be comfortable with everything from ordering lunch to interacting with high level donors in a fast-paced and professional office environment. Some fundraising experience and interest in the Jewish community is a plus. This position will include occasional weekend or evening work as needed for events or meetings.

The work of our department changes as we continuously seek to have greater impact. All of our team members must be flexible and able to adapt to short- and long-term shifts in their job duties.

Essential Job Functions

  • Gift Processing and Acknowledgement
  • Coordinate gift processing with the Business Office and maintain responsibility for accuracy of records in donor database, correspondence, and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Prepare acknowledgement letters to donors for various gift types, paying close attention to timeliness, nuance, and personalization.
  • Meetings and Events
  • Take an active role in planning key events, including designing invitations and coordinating with vendors, constructing the mailing list, and keeping door lists; some evening work required.
  • Manage all logistics of Development Committee meetings including scheduling meetings, preparing materials, ordering food, circulating meeting minutes, etc.
  • Annual Solicitations
  • Prepare all solicitation materials including e-blasts and letters using mail merge to customize all appeals.
  • Prepare call lists for volunteers and track prospect/donor responses from follow-up calls, emails, and notes.
  • Help draft solicitations as appropriate.
  • Additional Development Projects
  • Manage donor listings in The Chronicle (quarterly newsletter).
  • Manage memorial listings in the Roll of Remembrance (book provided to congregants each Yom Kippur).
  • Handle all aspects of Memorial Plaque donations and hangings.
  • Departmental Management
  • Process invoices and check requests, track budgets, create expense reports.
  • Schedule meetings on behalf of Director of Development with clergy, staff members, and congregants.
  • Field phone inquiries and follow up with information as requested in a warm and pleasant manner; includes covering the synagogue’s main phone line.
  • Maintain paper and electronic files.
  • Generate fundraising reports for analytical purposes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required; duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at the discretion of the Director of Development.

Minimum Qualifications


  • B.A./B.S. degree
  • One to two years of experience in a related field. Development experience a plus.
  • Excellent computer, writing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required, particularly Excel and mail merge (letters, emails, envelopes, etc.).
  • Sensitivity to confidential information and the appropriate maturity to exercise discretion.
  • Strong work ethic and desire to learn.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Stickler for accuracy and details.
  • Responsible and reliable individual with a pleasant and flexible attitude, willing to take on challenging tasks.
  • Interest in the field of Development as a career and desire to learn the fundamentals is a plus.
