This critical position is responsible for Preble Street advocacy programming, which includes advocacy and community organizing efforts addressing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Advocacy Director oversees the Maine Hunger Initiative, Homeless Voices for Justice, and all policy advocacy and community organizing efforts at the national, state, and local levels. Under the guidance of Preble Street leadership and working collaboratively with Directors of all Preble Street programs and the Development department, this key position plans and implements strategic advocacy and community organizing campaigns to advance the Preble Street mission.

Responsibilities of the Advocacy Director include representing Preble Street and the Advocacy program at the local, state, and national levels, providing supervision and support to Advocacy program staff, and assisting in grant writing and reporting. The Advocacy Director will also take on a leadership role in agency activities such as management meetings, training, community relations, and the Preble Street Race Equity Committee.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in related field of study, and significant, relevant experience in managing policy advocacy and

community organizing efforts; or comparable combination of education and relevant experience.

• A minimum of three years of experience working in community organizing and advocacy in issues related to social,

economic, or racial justice.

• Commitment to the Preble Street mission, understanding of social work best practices, and experience with homeless

and/or poverty-related service provision and policy advocacy.

• Experience in community organizing and advocacy work related to social, economic, and racial justice issues

• Demonstrated leadership and management skills within a collaborative environment

• Experience writing and managing grants, including budget oversight and data reporting.

• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

• Demonstrated collaboration and partnership skills with internal and external stakeholders.

• In-depth knowledge of poverty, hunger, homelessness, and structural racism.

• Knowledge of current events, policy issues, and the political climate in Maine.

• Experience with policy analysis, event planning, media messaging and public speaking.

• Master’s degree in a related filed and non-profit management experience strongly preferred.
