About the Staff Assistant Experience (SAE)

The Staff Assistant Experience (SAE) is a year-round, residential, transition-to-independence program for young adults with learning differences, ADHD, and/or non-verbal learning disorders and level 1 autism. The program offers participants (called “Staff Assistants”) the opportunity to practice skills in a communal setting that includes typically developing coworkers and peer role models. Participants share housing with Ramapo’s direct service staff on Ramapo’s Rhinebeck campus, work alongside program and support staff, and participate in off-campus vocational, educational, and recreational activities in order to improve and reinforce interpersonal, independent living, and job skills. Ramapo also offers two “next step” programs - the Post-Staff Assistant Experience and the Alumni Support Program – to provide faded support for SAE graduates who wish to continue living on campus or in Ramapo’s adjacent apartment complex.

About Ramapo for Children:

Through direct service youth programs and highly regarded training programs for adults, Ramapo has an impressive 98-year track record of working on behalf of young people, whose behaviors put them at risk of being relegated to the margins of their schools and communities. At the heart of Ramapo’s work is the conviction that all people - children and the adults who care for and nurture them - seek the same things: to be in community, to learn, feel valued, and experience success. Ramapo helps the adults in children’s lives, including educators and caregivers, see the behaviors they experience as challenging through the lens of meeting needs, developing skills and building community, and provides a set of tools for creating environments in which all children can experience success as they define it.

Ramapo’s programs include: The Staff Assistant Experience, a residential transition-to-independence program for young adults aged 18 to 25 with social, emotional, or learning challenges; Camp Ramapo, a residential summer camp in Rhinebeck, New York that serves over 550 children with a range of cognitive disabilities and behavioral challenges; Ramapo Retreats, short-term, adventure-based experiences for young people, educators, and community-based organizations, and; Ramapo Training, the component of the organization which brings the Ramapo approach to schools, youth service organizations and families through workshops, coaching and consultation.
