The Position

As our Managing Director of Talent and Operations, you will lead Thrive Scholars’ Operations team at an exciting time of significant organizational growth. In this role, you will work to ensure that our entire staff experiences Thrive Scholars as an excellent place to work, and is equipped to meet ambitious goals as we scale. As Managing Director, you will directly lead our talent function, designing and implementing all people policies, programs, and practices. Additionally, you will oversee our team of operations professionals, including the functions of finance, data systems, and general administration.

An ideal candidate will have prior experience leading talent and administrative operations in a growing national organization. 

This is a full-time position. The Managing Director can be remote, though will ideally be based out of one of our offices, in Boston or Los Angeles. The Managing Director will report to our President and COO, and will oversee a team of 6, including 3 direct reports (Director of Finance, Director of Business Intelligence, Manager of Talent Recruitment and Operations). 

Essential Functions

Human Resources and Talent Management (60%)

  • With support from the Manager of Talent Recruitment and Operations and in partnership with the President and COO and the Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer, you will develop and implement human resources and talent strategies that promote high levels of employee satisfaction, a culture of high performance, and long-term organizational growth and sustainability. 
  • Serve as the organization’s expert and leader in matters pertaining to hiring, orientation, leave and personnel matters, mediation, and compliance
  • Manage, assess, and develop strategies in talent recruitment, hiring and onboarding, and directly lead hiring for senior level positions
  • Oversee total compensation strategy, ensuring that salary structure and benefits are competitive to market and support positive employee experience
  • Inform and manage performance evaluation and 360 review processes
  • Gather data on staff experience through climate and pulse surveys, leveraging findings to shape people and culture strategy
  • Collaborate with President and COO, and people managers across the organization, on employee learning and development initiatives
  • Develop and plan staff events and retreats, employee communications and employee recognition programs.
  • Serve as the point-person for all human resources and personnel matters, and provide employee relations support, coaching and resources to employees and managers
  • Ensure internal policies align with organizational culture, best practice, and legal guidelines.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local labor, employment and benefits rules and regulations.

Team Leadership (20%)

  • In this role, you will lead our Operations team of 6 staff members, across the functions of talent recruitment, general administration, finance, and data systems. 
  • Hire, manage, and coach, ensuring that the team is equipped to reach ambitious goals 
  • Foster a positive team culture defined by commitment to results, effective collaboration, and an attitude of learning and growth
  • in partnership with senior leaders and the Operations team, develop and refine an organizational operations strategy and define operations goals and priorities
  • Ensure attainment of department goals and engage in ongoing evaluation and improvement processes informed by data

Administration (20%)

  • Leveraging the members of the Operations team, you will ensure that the organization’s administrative processes and resources are efficient and effective in meeting short- and long-term needs. 
  • Oversee general operations of the organization, including maintenance of the office (and, as needed, office relocation), relationships with partners/vendors, IT and instructional technology infrastructure, data systems, and financial operations. 
  • Lead the development and implementation of resources and practices that promote operational excellence such as goal and project tracking, interdepartmental collaboration and communication, and the integration of key systems. 


  • 7+ years of experience in talent leadership and/or operations roles
  • Experience and expertise related to the unique needs of growing organizations, and national organizations
  • Effective team leader, with experience leading high-performing and cross-functional teams
  • Expert knowledge of human resources best practice and compliance 
  • Strong professional ethics, sensitivity, and skill in responding to personnel issues
  • Effective in fostering an exceptional and inclusive internal culture that is aligned with organizational mission and values
  • Strong analytical skills and systems thinking, and use of data to drive decision-making 
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to strategically collaborate across levels and functions
  • Ability to integrate principles of diversity, equity and inclusion into talent and operations practices
  • Ability to turn ideas into action, developing and cultivating buy-in for new systems or processes where needed
  • Initiative in problem-solving
  • Commitment to the Thrive Scholars mission and a deep interest in working on behalf of high-achieving underrepresented students from low-income communities 
  • SHRM certification preferred


Thrive Scholars offers a robust compensation and benefits package including high-quality health and dental insurance, three weeks of paid vacation, generous professional development funding, and access to an employer-matched retirement plan. This is a full-time exempt position.

Salary Range: $115,000-135,000, commensurate with experience
