Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent, nonprofit legal aid organizations with nearly 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance.


Basic Function: The Government Relations and Public Affairs Coordinator (Coordinator) supports the Vice President for Government Relations and Public Affairs (GRPA) and provides high-level project and administrative support to the GRPA team, including the Director of Media Relations and Communications and the other program staff. This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, Local 135.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  1. Coordinates special projects for GRPA, such as coordinating logistics for congressional briefings and events, event registration, material preparation, and transportation. 
  2. Plans and organizes logistics for internal and external meetings, webinars, and other events. Prepares and coordinates materials and audio-visual support. 
  3. Coordinates implementation of annual evaluation of Board members and non-Board Committee members and ensures confidentiality.
  4. Coordinates issuance of annual request for external stakeholders to provide testimony for LSC Board to consider in planning for annual congressional budget request. 
  5. Works with Vice President to coordinate materials required by Congress for White House nominations to LSC Board.
  6.  Arranges meetings, handles calls and reviews correspondence for the Vice President, often screening calls and meeting requests when the Vice President’s personal attention is not required.
  7.  Composes and prepares correspondence and other documents in response to Congressional activities and inquiries from the public. Maintains electronic signatures for LSC Board Chair, President, and Vice President.
  8.   Acts as office administrator for administrative systems including maintenance of electronic files and records and time and attendance system to ensure GRPA follows LSC procedures and policies and secures necessary authorizations.
  9.  Performs research and copy-editing, handles distribution of LSC publications, and maintains mailing lists. Prepares Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and graphs and charts for reports.
  10.  Responsible for keeping current a variety of print and on-line subscription services, ordering supplies, and coordinating services with other LSC offices to ensure the efficient and smooth operation of the GRPA office. 
  11. Assists in responding to inquiries about LSC and its grantees from the Administration, Congress, federal agencies, state and local officials, and the public. Handles responses to all prisoner mail.
  12.  In collaboration with Office of Financial and Administrative Services, coordinates GRPA staff travel arrangements, conference registration, itineraries and expense reports, ensuring adherence to LSC travel policies.
  13. Coordinates the collection of materials determined by GRPA to be responsive to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and coordinates the transmittal of those materials to LSC’s FOIA Analyst.
  14. Assists in preparation of budget submissions, written testimony, LSC witnesses and related matters for meetings with staff and Members of Congress. Assists with development of submissions and related charts to the LSC Board Finance Committee related to budget submission to Congress.
  15.   As needed, provides support in preparation of, during, and following LSC Board of Directors meetings, LSC conferences, and other special events.
  16. Drafts position-specific onboarding schedules and plans for new GRPA employees.
  17.  Performs other related duties as assigned.


COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Sound judgment and discretion; ability to appropriately address confidential and sensitive matters; strong written and oral communication skills; high degree of flexibility and dependability; unimpeachable integrity and personal ethics; ability to effectively interact with wide range of stakeholders including Administration officials, Congressional staffers, and members of the Board of Directors; must demonstrate initiative and be an effective problem-solver; excellent customer service; ability to recognize matters of importance and bring same to the attention of Vice President and GRPA staff in a timely manner; ability to work well independently and as a member of a team; ability to systematically organize and catalogue data and information; adaptable; able to manage multiple tasks and adjust to shifting and changing priorities under tight deadlines; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.


Technical/Specialized:

A Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of relevant experience, or any equivalent combination of education and related experience totaling at least eight years. Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint and ability to create charts, graphs and rich graphic displays. Experience with HTML. Familiarity with computer graphics applications and content management systems, including Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Good analytical skills and ability to maintain and update electronic databases, resources, and tools.

Salary: $66,780


Salary range: $66,780- - $75,216


LSC has a competitive market-based salary structure that establishes a specific salary range for this position. The salary range has eight pay levels separated by seven steps. An employee must wait two years to advance in Steps 1 through 4. New hires begin at Step 1.
