Job Description:

NYLAG has an immediate opening for a staff attorney for the Legal Hand Project located in Crown Height, Brooklyn. Legal Hand is a walk-in legal information and resource office with five locations throughout New York City. It is a project of the Center for Court Innovation (CCI), and NYLAG partners to provide an onsite attorney to the Crown Heights office. The attorney selected for this position will train and supervise non-lawyer volunteers to provide high quality information about the legal system so that community members are better able to understand their issues, the legal systems that affect them, and any alternatives to court. In conjunction with a CCI Volunteer Coordinator, the NYLAG staff attorney will train and supervise the project volunteers to, among other things: issue spot; understand whether an issue is amenable to court resolution; consider the alternatives to litigation, such as mediation; identify legal and non-legal resources; locate available legal information including on LawHelp.org; understand the various court processes and how to navigate them; and complete court DIY forms. The attorney will provide legal advice to community members as necessary.

Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to public interest law and should have excellent written and analytic abilities. The successful candidate will work closely with NYLAG’s staff in a wide variety of practice areas and with staff at CCI.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Provide legal advice to community members on civil cases that are referred by the Volunteer Coordinator.

·        Provide assistance and information to volunteer staff on general legal issues and on specific cases.

·        Coordinate with the Volunteer Coordinator on volunteer supervision and ongoing training.

·        Coordinate with Volunteer Coordinator on organizing community education workshops and clinics.

·        Meet regularly and collaborate with CCI staff and the lawyers from the other Legal Hand offices to plan all-Legal Hand events, and develop general Legal Hand policies and procedures.

·        Staff the Legal Hand office full time, which includes, on average, two Monday evenings until 8pm per month and two Saturdays per month from 11am-2pm.

·        Provide referral services for emergency legal cases.

·        Staff community workshops and legal clinics.

·        Report to their supervisor at NYLAG.

·        Conduct community outreach through local businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, local politicians, and neighborhood leaders to promote program events.

Qualifications:

NYLAG seeks a highly motivated attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law. Applicants must have excellent communication, research, and writing skills. Civil legal services, clinical, fellowship, and/or clerkship experience required. Preference will be given to those applicants fluent in a language other than English. Applicants must have at least two years of experience and must be willing to learn the basics of the full range of civil legal services practice areas relevant to low-income New Yorkers. New York State Bar admission is required.
