Big Picture Philadelphia is a local educational non profit that is comprised of two high schools, el Centro de Estudiantes and Vaux Big Picture High School. While el Centro and Vaux serve two different constituencies and are at much different developmental stages, we share common commitments to non-traditional, student-centered education.

A Big Picture advisor is a social and emotional leader, an academic teacher and project developer, and an internship manager. First and foremost, the advisor is the “point person” for their 18 students and those students’ families. The successful advisor creates a safe, trusting, and collaborative learning environment that enables students to learn through school and community experiences and develop as mature, able, knowledgeable, and responsible individuals. An advisor is often responsible for a multi-year educational journey of 18 students, including their successful graduation and transition to a meaningful post-secondary activity.

El Centro (126 West Dauphin Street), now entering its 10th year, is an accelerated school within the School District of Philadelphia's Opportunity Network. El Centro enrolls over-age, under-credited students in a trauma-informed re-engagement model. There are 215 students at el Centro.

Vaux BPHS (2300 Master Street) is just completing its inaugural year as the newest school in the SDP's Innovation Network. Each year, Vaux will add another 9th grade class until it is at capacity (504 students), but we will have 252 9th and 10th graders in 2018-19. In partnership with the SDP, the PFT, and PHA, Vaux is a community hub that serves the immediate Sharswood community.

Advisors at Vaux Big Picture High School are employees of the School District of Philadelphia and members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. Benefits are attained through the SDP and PFT.

Advisors at el Centro de Estudiantes are employees of Big Picture Philadelphia, and have full coverage, including vision, dental, and prescriptions.
