Rite of Passage Journeys is excited to be accepting applications for our next Program Director. Join our team to lead and manage all aspects of our unique and transformative wilderness rite of passage programs, leadership trainings and lifespan community programs.


Director Position begins September 1, 2018. Full-time paid orientation begins mid-May

The Program Director tends the heart of the work of Rite of Passage Journeys, directing Wilderness and Rite of Passage Programs for youth and adults, as well as leadership trainings and contract programs. They also oversee life-span Community Programs in collaboration with the Community Programs Coordinator.

The Program Director reports to the Executive Director, and works in collaboration with the Office & Programs Coordinator and various advisory groups. They oversee all aspects of program development and delivery.


Deliver High-Quality Programs

● Recruit, hire and train excellent program staff

○ Direct staff training and enrichment opportunities

○ Mentor the mentors!

● Facilitate and direct Severance and Incorporation Ceremonies for Rite of Passage programs, and other program events as needed

● Schedule program slate and coordinate core program events and components (such as Ropes Courses, Elder’s Councils)

● Establish and ensure procedures and standards regarding program logistics (vehicles and transportation, itinerary and permits, food, equipment and supplies, paperwork and facilities)

● Develop and ensure effective safety and risk management standards and procedures

● Oversee registration and participant screening systems

Maintain and Develop Journeys’ Curriculum

● Continue to refine program offerings and program curriculum

○ Collaborate with core program staff, including advisory council(s)

● Develop and maintain systems to evaluate program quality and staff performance, and to incorporate improvements

● Develop staff manual and curriculum resources

● Oversee contract and custom programs, develop curriculum for custom programs and ensure quality program delivery

● Develop and support new programming as appropriate

Champion Journeys Programs through Outreach & Marketing

● Collaborate with graphic designers to produce inspiring print and online materials

● Develop Journeys’ brand as a hub of Rite of Passage programs, knowledge and training

● Select and attend appropriate events at which to promote Journeys’ mission and programs

● Steward and develop the community of support helping to spread the word of Journeys’ mission and programs

● Oversee production and maintenance of engaging online presence (Website, Facebook, Instagram, Blog and eNews)

● Develop and maintain connections with Journeys’ professional networks and kindred organizations (such as Wilderness Guides Council and Youth Passageways)

Additional Roles and Responsibilities

● Develop and manage program budgets in collaboration with the Executive Director

● Assist registration process by providing higher-level communications with participants and families

● Supervise and work collaboratively with the Office & Programs Coordinator, Basecamp Manager, and program-related interns and volunteers

○ Oversee the maintenance of Journeys’ basecamp by the Summer Basecamp Manager and volunteers

● Represent Journeys well to participants, parents, Songaia, and the public

○ Ensure staff uphold Journeys’ image in the world and online


● Must be Seattle-area based

● Office in Seattle, WA. Summer Basecamp in Bothell, WA. Wilderness Programs take place in Olympic and Cascade Mountains.

● Sept-May: Flexible schedule, can work remotely at times

● June-August: Schedule based on program events at Summer Basecamp

Level of Language Proficiency


● Must be 21 years of age

● Must be physically able to undergo the activities of Journeys’ programs

● Must pass a criminal background check

● Must have a satisfactory driving record

Desired Qualifications

● Four or more years of professional experience in at least one of the three following areas: wilderness program management, working with youth in a therapeutic or educational environment, working in rite of passage/vision fast work in a similar organization

● Experience leading wilderness expeditions, and knowledge of best practices in wilderness travel and risk management

● Excellent facilitation skills appropriate for working with youth and adults

● Excellent interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to build strong relationships with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds

● Experience developing and facilitating staff trainings

● Wilderness First Responder Training

● Deep personal connection to Rite of Passage work, including participation in personal vision fast(s) or similar kinds of soulwork
