POSITION: Senior Director of Communications

LOCATION: COVID-19 remote then based in Washington, DC by January 1, 2022


American Bridge 21st Century, a progressive research and communications organization dedicated to holding Republicans accountable for their words and actions, is hiring a Senior Director of Communications to manage the communications team and oversee the implementation of messaging, earned media, and rapid response strategy for the organization’s communications programs. This position oversees teams responsible for pro-Biden earned media efforts, the placement of opposition research against Republican targets at the presidential, Senate, gubernatorial and state legislative levels, and efforts to expand the organization’s footprint in local and national media. This position is a member of the organization's senior staff and reports to American Bridge 21st Century’s Vice President of Strategic Communications. The position is currently remote, but will ultimately be based in Washington, DC. 


Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the communications department to ensure all teams are successfully executing earned media strategies, including long-term programs and short-term projects
  • Implementing aggressive communications plans for the organization, its leadership, and its programs that will expand the organization’s footprint in local and national media
  • Working closely with the digital, video, and research teams to advance both communications and organizational goals
  • Participate in regular strategy sessions and planning meetings on overall message development as well as press plans for the week/day ahead, both for the organization as well as senior leadership
  • Developing proactive and creative earned media strategies, identifying new tactics to drive news coverage
  • Pitching stories to local and national media outlet and responding to reporter inquiries as needed
  • Briefing and prepping senior leadership and board members for media interviews
  • Working with partners and allied organizations to coordinate and amplify earned media efforts
  • Organize and direct American Bridge 21st Century’s rapid response efforts
  • Serve as a core member of the senior staff, helping to chart the larger strategy for American Bridge 21st Century


Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Strong team management and leadership skills and experience
  • Has at least eight years of experience in a communications capacity on a campaign or in a similar environment
  • Campaign experience in a leadership role, including experience working closely with opposition researchers to pitch stories
  • Strong relationships with local and national media
  • Significant on-the-record experience
  • Experience training and preparing principals for media appearances
  • Has a firm grasp of today’s traditional and social media environments
  • A desire to bring creativity and innovation to the earned media space
  • Enjoys working closely with others of diverse backgrounds and personalities
  • Works well under pressure and on deadline
  • Enjoys ensuring that big organizations operate in an organized and effective manner
  • Has a great sense of humor and creativity
