General Info. about the Position:
Academy Prep Centers for Education is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to inspire and empower students qualifying for need-based scholarships to become future community leaders through a rigorous middle school program coupled with ongoing graduate support. We have two campuses located in the urban centers of St. Petersburg (south) and Tampa (Ybor City).
AmeriCorps Specialist teachers serve a vital role at Academy Prep. They teach classes, supervise activities, and work closely with students and professional teachers. We are currently seeking passionate individuals ready to serve at our Tampa and St. Petersburg campuses. Academy Prep AmeriCorps Specialist teachers are employed by Academy Prep. They receive an $800 + monthly stipend, and health insurance and housing is provided by AP. They also commit to a year of service with the AmeriCorps program and document all service for AP for AmeriCorps. After 1 year of service, AmeriCorps gives the teacher an education grant for $6095 which can be used to pay back federally subsidized student loans or as tuition for continuing education.
Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree required. (No teaching certification required.)
Hours and responsibilities:
AmeriCorps teachers work 50 or more hours a week. The scheduled work day is typically 10 hours; however, within those 10 hours are a few hours allotted for planning time when the teacher may go to the apartment, eat lunch, plan for their classes, etc.
Service Time Commitment: June 1, 2019-May of 2020.
Training includes sessions on classroom management, lesson and activity planning, diversity training, team-building, and other topics. AmeriCorps teachers have a full week of training prior to the start of our summer program. During the summer program, AmeriCorps Specialist teachers both observe other veteran teachers and teach themselves, while closely supervised by another lead staff member. Prior to the academic year, the AmeriCorps have another full week of training. During the academic year, training includes professional planning days, weekly check-in meetings, and mentoring by a veteran teacher.
In exchange for their invaluable service, AmeriCorps teachers:
· Live on campus in beautiful, clean, furnished apartments
· Receive FREE rent, utilities, cable, and local phone service
· Receive a $800+ stipend per month
· Receive full health insurance
· Are awarded a $6,095 education award after 1 year of service
