POSITION OVERVIEW

Frances Moore Lappé--author of Diet for a Small Planet and 18 other books, including the most recent Daring Democracy--seeks an associate who is passionate about addressing America’s democracy crisis. She seeks candidates with at least general knowledge of issues at the heart of the crisis--from voter suppression to money-in-politics, as well as experience and skills in persuasive writing and social media. This position will work directly and closely with Lappé in creating blogs, articles, tweets, and brief videos, and possibly new book, as well as fostering collaborative relationships with other key democracy activists and writers. The work will include research, editing, fact-checking, and record keeping. Half-time is preferred, and in-person presence in our Cambridge office is required, although hours are flexible. Small Planet Institute is conveniently located near the Harvard T and our office is informal and cheery.

 

TIME COMMITMENT

Scheduling is flexible—we're willing to work around other commitments. We ask for a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week in our Harvard Square office because of the collaborative nature of the work with Frances. We are seek fill this position as soon as possible, ideally with a start date before Thanksgiving.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for democratic social movements and the mission of the Small Planet Institute is required, as well as general knowledge of the democracy system reforms needed. The ideal candidate will be a die-hard democracy movement advocate and interested in participating on an open exchange of ideas with Frances as they work together.
  •  Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed, including editing, research, fact-checking, and record keeping.
  • Strong social media content creation skills for Facebook and Twitter, including brief videos and/or interview footage.
  • Comfortable with teamwork and individual work. Ability to excel with minimal direction and supervision, and also able to follow directions when given.
  • Experience with project management and are excellent in keeping track of details.

 

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborative writing of blogs, articles, scripts, interview questions, etc.
  • Creating and posting social media content
  • Research assistance, fact-checking, and copy-editing
  • Fostering collaborative relationships with other key democracy activists and writers
  • Collaborate with Frances to manage all aspects of this Democracy project – record-keeping for the details, plans, and documents
